There are tons of variables. If I have lots of kite up and its powered, I can only head upwind for a short bit before the drag slows me right down. If Im on a small kite I can glide going straight up wind a fair bit longer. On the other hand, a big kite can be sheeted in to take most of my weight and kind of make for a floater feel in the middle of the move, where a small kite can't take my weight as well and the board is weighted throughout the move.
Think it naturally plays out that with a small kite you end up doing a sharper quicker turn and with a bigger kite it ends up slower, floatier and a bit wider.
This is referring to strapless foiling with tube kites.

I want to learn 180 upwind carves this summer. but i have a mental block about getting under/around the lines. I have watched all the videos and have it in my mind how it works, but once on the water foiling, it just seems too weird. I think I am going to pump up the old trainer and try it out under that ... figure out the dance moves on land. I imagine the learning process involves pulling with the wrong hand, kite going the wrong way, looping it unintentionally etc. Which doesn't sound all that much fun in a vulnerable position, with back to kite, getting pulled backwards and a foil in the mix! I bet it's like backrolls, "easy once you know how".
