Moses 550, 558 wings and 330 and 325 stabs mix and match

Postby cwood » Thu Jul 27, 2017 12:32 pm

I have these two front wings and stabilizers. I have two complete sets because I like to have a spare and swap out for chip repair (often rocky locations). I originally got the two wings and just the 330 stab.

Moving from the old style Silente and still a relative noob, I figured I would start with the 550 wing as it has a lower aspect ratio and figured more forgiving. I have now tried the various combinations:

550 and 330 - My initial impressions were that it was way smoother and less prone to cavitation than the Silente was...was very pleased. Over time I found that at higher speed you could not relax at all from a pitch perspective....you had to increasingly front weight to avoid breach. Breaches were not pretty.
558 and 330 - These are meant to be! I found this a much more balanced combo front a pitch perspective at all speeds. I also don't feel much difference between the two front wings. Maybe a little more top end for the 558 and a little more lower end for the 550.
550 and 325 - I believe these are meant to be together and it solved the pitch sensitivity at speed BUT...I found the yaw very twitchy without the winglets on the stab. I did not really enjoy this combination at higher speeds. I think it would be better for playing in swell etc but not my cup of tea.
558 and 325 - have not tried it yet but I would expect it to require the opposite as far as pitch....more bias to needing rear weight as you go faster plus the yaw twitch.

I will probably sell off the 550 and 325 in favor of a high AR speed set. or the 548 (anyone have comment on this one?)

Hi, ive all that combos also, and a 91 and 101 mast.

I would keep the 550+330 (or 325 if you want it more nervous) for very choppy/wavy days in higher winds and smaller kite sizes, it does not acelerate as fast as the 558, and the lift its more constant at lower speeds. Its a easier setup for strong wind.

On lighter winds i use the 558+330 all the time as it gives me more glide and speed, which helps in lighter winds.

The 558+325 its too nervous at speed, i dont like it, maybe with more skill.

A also never used again the 91 mast, im always on the 101, as it makes everything related to foot switching easier.

Hope that helps,

Regards

I have the 550 & 548 with the 330 rear wing on a 2016 Fluente mast.
22sessions, and been flying the 548 since session 9. When I switched to 548, I was much less proficient, up and flying back and forth with only some control. now I'm doing 30 km sessions and yesterday I did 10 or so heel to toeside carves and riding toeside for first time. I'm still a noob.

I find the 548/330 combo fairly easy now. But I've only ridden a trashed and bent fuselage LF on Foil fish board for 10 minutes, so I've nothing to compare really. It was really slow and had much less yaw stability.
Now that I'm turning and doing transitions, I have feeling that there's too much yaw stability and not agile enough, so I ordered the 325 wing yesterday.
I'm not finding any reason to put the 550 back on, because on 548 I'm doing 30-35 km/hr just cruising, and 40-45km/hr on reaches- and those are plenty fast for me! I fell doing 48 km/hr yesterday and have a little neck/headache pain today because of it.

I'll try combination of 548 and 325 first.

What mast do you have?
When I was in early sessions, I thought the 550/330 was blistering fast and I had trouble keeping it down too, but im 100% sure it was my lack of skills. When I put on the 548, I couldn't tell any difference, but im told there is. I guess I might feel difference now.

I'm hoping Moses will do an even slower wing. There's rumours that they have something in the works, but not like a Takuma. I'm also wondering how much my Fluente mast limits performance if I got a faster wing.

My thinking is that a super slow wing would be good in higher winds and wavy, choppy conditions, which I get a lot. And faster more sporty wing in lighter and flatter conditions.

I have the Vorace mast and would not go shorter. You will definitely find the 325 looser...it was this looser feeling I didn't like at speed so it would perhaps be good with the slower wing.

I was thinking of having 2 setups : 548/325 and 558/330. But at this point I'd like an even slower wing than 548 and keep the 550. So I'm going to wait a while and see what Moses does.

Preferably I'd use only one mast and have 2 wing+ fuselage setups I just exchange. it's only 2 screws.

48km/h with the 548 its ALOT of speed, thats about the speed I can get with the 558 with decent control

Pedro, my Suunto Ambit said I reached that speed, and my foiling acquaintance did 49km/hr using the Locosys watch, which is more accurate. So I'm fairly sure that's correct. It's not sustained speed, just momentary top speed.
We both crashed at those speeds, so maybe we don't have control!

Ever try the vorace competition with 600/380 wings?

I've tried to see what lift off speed is looking at watch, but im too focused on lifting off to really see the watch, plus there's some lag in speed readout. But I think it's about 12-15 km/hr. When when I have just popped up,I've looked at watch and it's showing 17-18 kmhr.

Sometimes I crash and I look at watch quickly after fall and I see speed during fall on the display, even though I am not moving.

Besides that top speed, what are your other max speeds on that session? I also have a recorded top speed of 58km/h on my suunto which i know its wrong.

I still did not try the 600/380 it will be my next aquisition.

Like i expected the 41km/h its an individual spike, 35km/h its already a very good speed for the 548, it should be already lots of front foot pressure needed at that speed.
