2018 LF Thruster Foil

Postby ralu81 » Fri Aug 18, 2017 12:19 am

I saw LF's new foil line showed up on MacKite's website today. Curious if anyone has tried the thruster out and how it would be to learn on?

The latest and greatest fuselage weights 1220g. If this is correct number (they have a record publishing wrong figures in the past), then it is a shame.

Please explain why it is a shame?

Were you hoping the rear section behind where the mast attaches to be bendy and made of light weight rubber or that it was a two piece section for easy storage?

Because that's HEAVY.

The first weight of a carbon foil I could find was the Horue GP 2016: 1760g

And that's not even a race foil

The new fuse looks to be about the same weight as their 2017 aluminum fuselage. However they do have a carbon version of 2017 fuse which weighs around 1.1 lb. I hope they will make 2018 carbon fuselage version as well :thumb:

The Horue H13 foil is probably the lightest on the market.

A fuselage tapered towards the tail is an axiom of hydrodynamics. Also it doesn't need to be as strong at the stabilizer end, as near the mast. This is the basic wisdom of mechanical lever. In their 2015 and later in 2016 version they give the fuselage a minimal thought. Sure, narrower fuselage near the stab would require smaller attachment bolts for stab, but they just went the simplest route and didn't bother. If their newest, "hydrodynamically optimal" version has the same weight, this means it is grossly overbuild for strength.

Let me put it this way: if competitor alum vendors produce foils weighing 4 kilos, and LF is 4.5, perhaps there is some room for improvement?

Or one the happy foil used a box section and the new one is solid

I guess you should go and tell levitaz that their solid steel fuselarge is wrong as well. It's heavy too!

Do bear in mind that levitaz principle business is precision engineering in steeland has been for over 50 odd years

I don't know what you have meant by "box section". Their fuselage cross section is round with the top and bottom planed/sawed off (the cheapest shape to produce, I guess). Ironically, this makes fuselage cross section more wide than tall. Think how silly it is: the forces on the fuselage are clearly directed more vertical, than horizontal!

Furthermore, I don't know why you bring up Levitaz design. Wasn't it you who repeatedly insisted that split fuselage is a no go, and failed to retract your obviously flawed assertion?
