Which Hydrofoil to choose ?

Postby flysurfing » Mon Aug 21, 2017 11:27 pm

Hello All,

I am looking for a foil to play during light wind time. (9/13 KTS).

I'd like to go for strapless with a board around 120/125 max due to travel constraints.

Mast shall be 70cm as it would make it easier in lagoons, I would prefer a pro box or the plate integrated into the mast.

What would you recommend me so far for the foil and the board? I have some experience with foiling with a Keto's wave foil and 130 board.

Thanks for your recommendation.

I have, shortly, and friends riding this one, the foil is just fine for everything.

The T40 board I have ridden a lot (with other foils mounted) and would think it is perfect for you, not the easiest for beginners as quite short, but it has a lot volume so when learned it is a good board IMO.

Light, short, wide, and volume - really good :thumb:

Thus you wont outgrow this one, like you will on a huge "plank" of a ferry

I'm a veteran beginner using the T40 from start (with the Silente).
Very pleased with it. Couldn't feel any special difficulty.
Be sure you get proficient assistance with the position of the straps, otherwise you'll loose a lot of time on trial and error (been there as nobody could assist me :-?)

Would probably get better feedback with noting your riding level, weight and what your local riding conditions are like?ie ocean waves, flat lake foiling, chop etc

Hello,

I am a beginner but this is not really the issue I am ok to improve on a small board. What is important is to have a small board + short mast allowing me to kite in the lagoon condition i often kite in. Also i will be using this foil from 8 to 14 kts so this is really for light wind, therefore, the need for a slightly bigger wing.

thx for your reco.

A French kite site (forgot which) did a comparison.
Here's the result.
I "upgraded" from the Cabrinha Double Agent to The Zeeko Alu. An excellent value, and everyone who tried it say it's great. You can have a 60 cm on top of the standard 90 cm mast. And a bigger, slower Carver wing. The Airwave 5.2 board happens to be one of my best wave boards, but probably not ideal for strapless. They have a shorter, dedicated board for that I believe.
PS: I have no commercial interests with Zeeko.

I am considering to change from a TKF Manta + Mitu convertible to one of the options below. The aim is to get a lighter setup and also something that is suitable to progress further. Eventually I would like to race speed... No flying transitions yet. Currently riding strapless involuntary since the footstraps inserts of the Mitu are a bit crappy.

Board: Moses T60 board
Foil: Moses HydroFoil Vorace Competition
Used 2250 euro

Board: hypermiller 4'8 2017
Foil: ghostwhisperer 107cm 2017
Used 2100

Board: TBD
Foil: Levitas Aspect 3, 96cm mast. (Evan is selling this one)
Used 900€

Would any of these allow me to progress quicker compared to the Manta (I believe a 2015 foil). Which one would be the better choice / deal?
Or should I go for a less racy foil in between?

Shipping might be expensive, but this gear is excellent. https://www.jshapes.com/ Buy whatever you like. It's all good and very reasonably priced.
