Starting is the same, longer mast is much better once you know how to ride and have deep enough water.

My 2cents

The hard part is getting board in position to get up

Shorter mast makes easier to position board, since u have to put board sideways and quickly get foot in straps to control board and get in position to get up

What I found is that once you are quick to put board sideways, and get both feet on straps, and up, then not much diff

Issues while trying, board has mind of its own and shorter mast is more err forgiving.

I tried long mast. Could not control. Short mast learned technique to get on. If you have experience getting on strapless surfboard it helps. Because as was said earlier you will use your feet and legs to leverage board sideways to be able to get on

Hope this helps
