Water starting Technique different?? Short Mast vs Long??

Postby Big Wally » Sun Sep 03, 2017 7:47 pm

I got ALL the reasons/differences how the short Mast vs Long Mast ride, perform, punish if you breech etc.

Only question: is there or is there NOT a difference in water starting technique/compensate difference between the Short & Long Mast?

Thanks in advance.

No difference, when you water start your are just rolling up onto the board like you would with any other board. The feeling might be slightly different from the added length and weight but the idea is the same.

Only difference you will notice for the waterstart if you do it strapless with the same board & foil - only variation will be mast length - is timing: a short mast will sink a bit quicker than a long one.

With straps there will be no difference!

Still I do not believe in those short masts.
Nice for schools, but a waste of money for the solo surfer.

You can start riding strapless on a short mast foil, like you would a regular SB. No "need" for water start technique.
(Cab. DA can be started like that as well)
I mean when one start learning as well...

With a longer mast it's harder to tilt the board onto its side. I put my knee on the closer rail, and pull the other rail towards me.

I read somewhere that you have to "compensate" more when starting w Long Mast ?? Compensate for what? Nothing?

Hard to say without context. My suggestion is to go ride and not overthink the theory :thumb:

Water starting is pretty much the same whether you're on a surfboard or a hydrofoil with any length of mast. Just make sure it's pointed in the right direction and let your kite pull you up onto it.

The difference is when you're standing up and on foil. The shorter mast is much more stable and forgiving of mistakes. With a longer mast your errors are exaggerated because the arm of the catapult is longer.

Makes sense Dylan. Can you clear up " pointed in wright direction"?

Thanks

This might be true if you have straps on your board.
Strapless,in my experience, a long mast and a regular size or smaller board "needs" to be tilted for water starting.
With more skills, its possible to let your kite pull you up on the board, but that comes later, since its a skill it self.

Yesterday I foiled from a flat on the edge of a river channel at low tide, where much of the flat was too shallow to restart with my 91cm mast in the 8-10 knots breeze. The river channel had a little current and also made waterstarts harder. Not quite ideal, but this spot was the best one I could access within miles in yesterday's weather. A shorter mast would have saved me a good bit of wading. So it's still in the wish list (along with a bit more floaty board) for my area, where light winds and shallow water mean the low volume board and foil will often sink deep before I get it going.
