Get a carbon foil instead Taut - problem solved and you can let everything "stick" as long and salty as you want :thumb:

Never ever hose anything down - it is a really welcome luxury that is great when you ride often, besides having a smoother and lighter hydrofoil now :naughty:

So back in the day (could be 2004?) the carbon foil was a lot more expensive and I remember a buddy of mine hit his on the reef and the whole thing just exploded. After that I was weary...the carafino foil was carbon, but a bit inconsistent in terms of quality...and it seemed sometime the cloth was oriented the wrong way etc. Kind of silly things because the pricepoint was good.

Are there any real benefits to carbon wings? I guess flex patterns would be one, but I can't see how weight would be a major factor?
I do tend to bring one of these with me: http://www.rinsekit.com/
So I guess a quick rinse wouldn't take too much time if I remember it :-)

I love the 3m set up you have tho. :-)

Yes, some of the older Carafinos could "explode" if you hit something, some of them worked just great and held up, but others could explode as said.

There are IMO only advantages with carbon, eventhough a lot more expensive of course.

Lighter for same stiffness.
Less drag.
No corrosion issues.
Ability to make 3D shapes for connections and taper of mast.

Aluminium works just fine, but if you have had a good carbon foil you will have a tough time, most never I think, going back :naughty:
Okay, that could be one very relevant reason NOT to ever get one, I know, it will be cheaper that way :D

Carbon from the experienced brands has come a long way during the years, amazing.

And trust me, if you ever ride or have a light foil you will know why low weight means so much, as if you are jumping it is a must with low weight, but also for waterstarting where they sink slower, and for walking with the hydrofoil (which you have to do a lot just to get out at least - in is often not that difficult as you can ride a lot further), and I would say they feel more agile when turning too, eventhough here the board is the most important, being light and small of course.

My point is - if you have had a good carbon foil you will be spoiled

Well said Peter.

(Incidentally the image of a broken foil above is not a real carbon one but is just a composite material without carbon cloth.)

That North foil looks like it melted.
Was that caused just by leaving it in the sun?

Our local North dealer has not had any foils delivered yet from North. It sounds more like North wants to ensure everything is durable before they put it in stores.

But this is a Naish topic and I haven’t heard any problems with that foil. Any first hand reports?

😉 CG

So I asked my dealer and he said that had been nothing....but I mean he would say that...hmm actually I do not think he would bullshit me, but its still so new new that anecdotal data shouldn't be deciding that.
Looking at the parts tho, they seem a lot more put together than I have experienced in my past foil purchases.
I am also glad Naish went with the plate mount approach. My first foil had a tuttle connection and we ended up widening it just from use so much that the foil felt lose in the box. Obviously that could have been fixed in the modern solutions, but the Carafino mount always felt both simpler and sturdier to me. I am still left in limbo with no wind so I have not yet been able to take it out. :/

I will find out eventually :-)
I think for me just getting back into it, and get my technique down is going to be the most important goal. I also want to SUP my foil so I have some learning to do :-)
Right now I do not think I would be able to discriminate it properly. Maybe once I get better.
