G10 wing replacement for fragile carbon

Postby Foil » Mon Nov 20, 2017 7:52 pm

Is anybody offering a G10 glass wing for the Moses range?
I have recently discovered that the carbon wrap wings are prone to damage on the leading edge which if you simply take wet and dry paper to it,it will not smooth down to a fine finish that will prevent cavitation, the rough inner core material is only a few mm below the surface, and this material if exposed even a tiny bit is enough to prevent you maintIning any height or speed, it simply dumps you violently into the water, the same happens if you try to go upwind or faster than very slow.
Having used G10 for countless years in windsurfing and used on some of my Nobile twin tip fins,I have found them indestructible, and if you do manage scratch them on rocks they are easy to polish back to new, and because of this they last forever.
It was really annoying today when I used a brand new "carbon wing " and as the tide was going out and I slowed down and brushed the sandy bottom, the scratches were surprisingly deep on the wing, if I had been using a G10 wing this would simply not happen.

Hi,

Sorry to be little off topic. I have G10 wings and im thinking about carbon ones because of weight. Solid G10 is VERY heavy. Do your moses foil float?

Pros and cons of G10 wings right there.

Foil: I am guessing Moses doesn't make them. You could buy some and drill holes to fit your fuselage. Or you could make your own ... not that hard to make a workable wing, even a doofus like me did it ... a few hours with a belt sander. :D

Moses carbon wings are foam filled, you can get (from other manufacturers) solid carbon wings which are stronger than G10

Just ordered a Gong G10 front wing medium, it looks superbly made, almost translucent appearance, I will need to spend some time ensuring the profile where it attaches to the Moses fuse is just right, G10 is so hard to hand profile, I once tried to make a skeg for a windsurfer and gave up as it was impossible to work on the material, I called into Tarifa fin company whilst in Tarifa to see how he made fins and he told me you need specialist machines to work on the material, hacksaws, files and bench grinders are useless.
I will weigh the G10 wing against my carbon wrap ones, and let you know if it's a good replacement link-.http://gongsupshop.com/epages/box1707.s ... %20Foil%22

Foil. How about a spacer made from nylon cutting board or a piece of polycarbonate plastic?
If you have CAD you could modle it and get it 3d printed.

Right on, hope the gong wing attaches without too much trouble. It is probably heresy to suggest it, but may end up being easier to make a new fuselage out of aluminum bar than to try to get the wing to fit your fuselage. Drill all the holes you want, aluminum's cheap. ;-)

I am no pro, but my limited G10 experience has found: carbide cutting blades and drill bits are key. I went through a whole pack of jigsaw blade varieties, they are soft as butter against the g10, dulled in seconds. But the carbide works well, slow and steady. 50grit sandpaper on belt sander was fine too. I had hoped to use a rasp to remove more material more quickly, but that tool didn't last long either. For countersinking holes, the shaping tool on dremel worked best....not sure what it's made of, but not the metal one, more like a sandstone.

Good luck / best wishes

It will be interesting to see what the difference is when it comes on Friday,
Fingers crossed it will be a doddle.
Forever the optimist :D

The jig saw makes really fine dust, I hope you're wearing a proper breathing equipment and dumping all wearable's outside your home.

Belt sander is even worse coz the dust with no vac connected goes everywhere (some woodworking masters claim that no vac is better, but that was before hepa filters me thinks).

The carbon wing can be made in no time, we talking 5 hrs max, with minimum sanding. Not worth the risk of breathing G10 dust for me.

Good tip on using a dremel, I have been looking for a reason to buy one, the pawn shops (cash converters)seem to have a good choice in for silly money.and might have a small belt sander in.

It's worth remembering this cavitation problem as it's happened twice to me and a few times for my sailing buddy, and it was caused by minor scuffing to the leading edge of the front wing, which when sanded down with 350 and then 600 grit wet/dry paper the rougher core showed through, but the profile was ok, it was simply the rough surface that prevented any pressure being applied for going upwind, reaching any speed other than very slow, was impossible,
even trying to get the board to full mast height was impossible, and when it let go,it was instant without warning.
