Waves - concave or convex deck around front foot?

Postby pikovsg » Sun Feb 04, 2018 11:46 pm

For waves/carving - is it better to have flat, concave or convex deck area around front foot? (I know concave on back foot for sure)

Made a few custom boards to test different deck shapes. My personal experience, definitely no convex under the feet. A little concave on front or back can be nice, too much hated it. I am now riding perfectly flat decks front and back foot.

I had flat, now i have concave front an rear. Its like a skateboard deck in the fact that a bit of concave helps lock your feet a bit, but it also make the board stiffer and more responsive to input. Makes for a more lively ride that flat board. You make like it or not like it. Certainly makes the flying foot switch hard as the board is more twitchy.

I like a little concave or flat. I really dislike convex.

I dont like concave, I find it odd and annoying having to "point your feet" forward (well, okay, to leeward....)
Both on hydrofoils and surfboards.

Especially if you stand with rear foot leeward and front foot windward (as I often do) - it feels even more wrong with concave... (to me)

Flat is great, but a little, maybe some, convex really pleasant too sometimes.
Say when you heal over like when having some kitepull.
