To be fair, I think the "adjustment" on an ML is just replacing the entire lower section :lol:

J shapes also fixed rear wing.

I think very few people tune their foils. If they don't like the performance they sell and buy another foil. The presumption is that the foil is tuned optimally.

However i dont think this is the case. A production foil will be tuned to give an intermediate perfomance to suit most riders. But what if you want more stability and to go slower? then add stab aoa. What if you want better top speed and more maneuverability reduce aoa. You can change a foils feel considerably by adjustments of the stab. Most people are oblivious to this!

But this is exactly my point ... when I get guys started on the foil I recommend a washer on the rear stab to shift weight forward increasing stability and as they progress to remove the washer

Must say, I think most or all hydrofoils today got a very good default trim that fits most or all riders.

And not the cause to why some would sell a foil - as they are way too expensive, and we all know each other in the local communities, so if any issues we simply share how to tune or what to do or try.

Assume it is the same all over the world :D

I understand shimming is not necessarily a regular thing but it is essential to tuning your ride. I do it a lot . I assume some other people do this right? Commercial foils aren't set up perfect out of the box for everyone are they? I also understand some wings are not shimmable.

If you want to be drastic you can sand camber into your lower surfaces , tips on the stab, root on the main wing! I don't recommend this but it's noticeable.


1 AOA rear wing relative to front wing

2 AOA front wing relative to baseplate/box

3 Sanding smooth

4 filling and painting

5 ....?

6 ....?

After sanding you can wipe epoxy on and then wipe thoroughly clean and it with impregnate the fibers nicely.

Please share if you have any thoughts or routines on tuning your ride


Tips , experiences, failures , successes ?? how do you tune?

Since few hard crushes, I tune my foils (Zeeko) to slow max speed and deacrease foil drag at lift off at the same time.

I shim front wing to increase its AoA, leaving stab as it is.
This way fuse travels at negative AoA at higher speeds = more drag = lower max speed.

At low speed fuse travels at AoA close to 0 = less drag = better low limit. (I presume foil producers calculate min fuse drag at max foil speed).

Works fine.
Helps in waves and if you retire😜.
Improves jumpig ability a bit as well

2)
I shim mast plate to make my both legs are bent at the same angle. This will reduce pain in front or rear leg.
Was important at my 365km long one day run.

3)
For jumping I shim stab to make the foil quick at lift off.

If to much FF pressure, move straps forward.
It adds another meter or two to my jumps.

YES!
Thank you grandpa, I knew someone out there was tuning with every trick they can think of. I suspect that the art of tuning a foil is in its infancy. I believe that we should be able to go back and tune yesterday's foils to a very high standard. I am a one man show and I have been struggling hard alone with tuning to perfection.

I still want to hear more tips or quirky routines goofy or not, there is more to this , the manufacturers don't hold the key, we do.

Sunscreen, Vaseline on the tips, 60 grit on the fuse, packing tape. Beer cans, .....?

I spent so many hours on this design, I was sure it would be the latest greatest, I have been unable to tune it properly, I've gone back to a 3 or 4 piece setup


I realize there are different limited option with each foil but where there is a will, there is a way.

Oh yeah. 365km that is freaking awesome!

Now what about a mechanically self adjusting stab mounted on a hinge and spring that has a high aoa for take off and slow speed. As you go faster the water pressure pushes the stab to a flatter aoa for better top speed?

To trick would be make a mechanism that didnt flutter.
