board - how to MacGyver connection?

Postby grigorib » Wed Feb 14, 2018 7:50 pm

I have a MHL 2013 board with plate connection which has 3.375” width between M8 holes. Any suggestion how to easily modify it, or to use an adapter (not the glue-on) to fit standard 3.5” (90mm) spacing mast to it?

Why can't you buy a standard 90mm aluminum mast and just drill some holes in the new mast that fit your current mounting holes?

It’s carbon, I’d prefer to not drill in it...
Widening holes in aluminum plate is a good option just to be able for someone else to use it I guess.

Right so you keep the carbon mast, but use a different mounting plate, an aluminum mounting plate which you then modify by drilling holes. It's not all one piece right? I assume you have a carbon mast, carbon wing and a carbon mounting plate which you can take off?

No, it’s one piece mast and the plate
Funny that I can mount the MHL mast onto track connection since difference is little but no chance any mast fits the board

Hard to tell what’s inside the board. I can see there’s a large plate under board carbon layer and if I knew it’s ok to drill additional holes and thread them in the plate that’d also help achieving the goal. Guesses?

Seems like an adapter plate is your best bet. Take a piece of 1/4 inch aluminum, drill two sets of holes, one with the small mounting size and one with the larger holes, fix the various bolts so that everything works. One set of bolts will go into the board, another set of bolts will face out from the board. You want the bolts to be flush (I guess technically they are called flat head machine screws) and one of the sets (the set facing out) will have to be fixed in place so you can tighten your nuts on to the adapter plate while the bolt head is behind the adapter plate.

Given that it's an old board, and not really worth anything, drill a couple of new holes right through the board. Reinforce the holes with glass and epoxy. Do whatever you have to do to make it strong and work. Screw it in. Go riding.

That would be my solution too.
Either drill in the board, or the carbon plate at the one piece plate/mast.
It is old stuff anyways.

Making an adapter will be quite difficult at least how I see it, and you have to weld (or at least fasten) the countersunk screws so they dont turn - NOT an ideal solution and a lot weaker as you destroy the hardening/stainless properties of the bolts if doing so, besides the extra need of nuts on top of the board and under the carbon plate too.

Just elongate the holes slightly, only .o6" on each hole then add a washer under the head of the screw.
Or, build a new plate, cut the old plate off and bond on the new plate. Not that hard to do.

Is the problem both ways or just the width?
For the width it’s only a bee’s dick over 3mm different so just open up the hole.
If length is also a problem maybe use two existing inserts then do the drill through board for the other 2.
