Hydrofoil Aerial Transitions

Postby fun2kite » Wed Feb 21, 2018 12:59 am

Hi all,

This thread is to discuss howto, share advice and videos and everything else related to aerial transitions on a foil.

I am now at the stage of comfortably landing all my jumps from heelside and almost 100% of my backrolls with 50% of backrolls without a touchdown. And i wanted to learn about aerial transitions. ( I am not ready for them just yet, but I want to hear what other people are doing)

How many of you already doing aerial transitions? What is your experience? Dos/Dont’s , tips etc.. Please share.

Which one should one attempt first? What are the pitfalls. (pun intended :-) etc..

What gear is best for aerial transitions? I ride Moses (full carbon) and have no issues with back-rolls swinging my foil board almost above me during the rotation. I think so called "swing weight" is critical here, so the lighter the gear the easier it is to do an aerial transition.

Share your experience, share your videos and lets discuss it.

-D.

Maybe back up the bus a bit and have some tips for just landing a jump.

Yes, please. Can I have some tips for jumping from toeside?

I land all my jumps from heelside and backrools.
My highest jump on a foil from heelside is about 18 feet landed.

I'd say the easiest transition is an upwind jump from heelside and land toeside. Just see that as a half backroll. The weight of the foil makes this more natural than with a directional or TT. I ride a Zeeko Spitfire and although its significant weight comes into play in the dynamics of the jump, it can also come as an advantage, with some sort of self righting effect. I haven't jumped much with any other foil to compare, but I find the Spitfire pretty straightforward for launching and landing, with a semi-pleasant "Shkrooonk!" noise when the wings punch back through the water.

Hi fun2kite,
a light foil as moses fits well for sure. Easy first arial transition is starting toeside:

Next step can be to do the same heelside and switch feet in the air:

"just" do the same feet switch as on a jibe while in the air

Thank you Sergio. Good to be able to see it in action.
