Postby Fab_1900 » Fri Feb 23, 2018 1:21 pm

hi, i'd like to modify my 5.1 kiteloose fatty kiteboard (bamboo) to host a moses silente hydrofoil. do you have any suggestion on which are the best tools and way to do it? (no sticking stuff on the bottom side of the board!). thanks! :thumb:

You have to check if the bottom is flat. The plate has to be on a flat surface.
If not you can make a thin spacer out of soft wood or high density foam (250kg/m3 or more). The spacer has to be shaped on one side to fit the bottom form.

Next, drill 4 -20mm diameter holes at correct distances from tail and right for your plate. You'll have to search around for the right placement from tail, but 250 mm to rear holes is pretty standard.

Fill those holes with solid epoxy and preferably some glass fiber mixed in. You will want to so this in 3 stages if your core is eps, otherwise the heat may melt your core. It's really easy to melt it and if you do, it's a total mess.
After they are filled I would put a patch of 2 layers of carbon on the bottom, 160mm x300 mm
That will have to be filled and faired.
On the deck you might get away with no patch, but there's a risk the epoxy plug will crack in join to the deck laminate, allowing water in. So it's best to have removed the deck pad in the area and put a few layers of glass over the plugs. A little 160x 200 mm patch. Then just put a deck pad back over it.
Now you can mark out and drill out with a 6,5 mm drill from bottom to deck.
Use cap head M6 318 stainless screws through board to attach. You'll need the M6 bushing nuts- moses has them on their website. Or Famousfrank in Hamburg.
I buy my fasteners from Westfield fasteners in UK

Hey,

I hava a KL Skimmy, it is a super looking board.

On the same boat, will mount my HF on it. However, with a different approach than the above since my board has 4 TT fins, holes drilled all the way.
Will make a big plate, secure it in place via current holes, and on that plate will have holes for hf plate.

D.

@ cwood
the board has an Epoxy layup with an Airex core (fiber-reinforced urethane foam) and bamboo
@Tomw
the board is a superlightwind, pretty flat, so i think a spacer is not needed. basically you say to drill larger holes, fill them up with proper material, put layers of carbon on both bottom and deck and finally drill holes through the board. correct?

Yes, this is correct. You don't have to use carbon fiber, glass will do fine, just add a bit more layers on bottom
