Possible Hydrofoil sale scam

Postby vman » Fri Apr 27, 2018 9:11 am

Hi guys

just thought its my responsibility to inform the kite community of a possible scam.
So the story goes, saw an ad for a comet going for $970
I send the seller the comet link to confirm that this was what he was selling, he confirmed.
I realised from the wing sizes, it was the 2017 model, then he said he was selling whats in the photos.
So that was the 1st hint, but I really wanted the deal if it was real.

I asked why he was selling it, he said his wife bought him a Zeeko and he loves it. :o

I checked on the same ad site that he had a few foils and boards for sale, Zeeko as well, all at incredible prices. :o

All ads were from the same seller but at different locations. :o

He checked the courier chargers and quoted me $100 from US to Singapore. UPS or Fedex , dam good rate. :o

The last thing that gave it away was the method of payment that he insisted " PayPal family and friends" or bank transfer.
He said normal paypal will take 21 days. Really???

to end it off, he said "Sir. I cannot wait for 21 days before I get my money. If the options i gave you don't suit you then it's fine.
I won't ship without having my funds in my hand and there are people who are asking for the foil.
Cheers "

Before I reveal the link, let me know what you think.

I hope that if this guys is a scammer, no one will fall for it.

Thus on ikitesurf classified? Last year there was a guy repeatedly posting fake ads from interior USA locations. Price too good to be true and wire transfer pay were giveaways. I sent a complaint to mngt and they took ad down. He'd post new ones daily.

Another giveaway: search some distinctive text from the ad in Google with quotation marks around it. This guy was just repeating past legit ads with lower prices.

Btw i asked for a photo of the foil with his ID in view.....he flipped out, "how dare you accuse me of dishonesty bla bla". That was the end of that.

All those foils are or were listed on the Oz seabrease site, a scammer has just lifted the pictures from there.

I was scammed on ikitesurf. Lost a lot of money for an imaginary board.

I’m afraid I’d avoid all sellers on that site, unless you can look them in the eye or confirm identity

PayPal transactions with buyer protection and Google reverse image lookups are mandatory for me.

If you've paid with a credit card through paypal, seems you're pretty proctected ... 2 levels of buyer protection there. I'll even offer to pick up the paypal fee (2.9%).

Google reverse image lookup: does this mean searching the image name? That would catch the doofus seller like this guy, who is just lifting prior ads and reposting them. But not someone who would take the time to rewrite the ad or save the photo with a new name.

Talking on the phone is a good cautious stop, lot easier to catch a liar in a fake story. But also asking for a photo of them with the sale item showing ID. If a buyer asked me for this, I'd say "no problem", a reasonable seller has nothing to hide.
