It's hard to explain. When i started foiling the board would hunt me down and smack into me. Now, whenever I crash it doesn't. I think I have learned to master the art of a toe flick and dive as I exit the foil. Sends the foil in one direction while i go in the other.
I really don't know how to explain it.
I was warned about this when I first started just 12 months ago,
It worried me a little as it sounds so dangerous, however my sailing buddy who started 18 months before me, had this happen to him all the time,
his trips to hospital for glue or stitches made him a regular visitor, and this really put me off taking up the sport.
Then he changed from his very heavy foil set up to a Carbon set and lightweight 3.5kg board,
After this the board following him into a crash nightmare stopped completely.

With this in mind after 4 weeks on my heavy newbie gear I swapped it out for my mega lightweight Moses gear, and in over a thousand crashes not once has the board followed me.

A couple of days ago i was cruising with my hydrofoil at medium speed when my mast probably hit some trash dumped in the sea by humans.
Kite was pretty high, i jumped as far as i could, didn't look back and still got hit by the board, at my forehead right under the helmet's line.

Anyone tried to develop the habit of covering the face with an arm while crashing?
Other than what i already did, can someone share some other advices (from experience)?

I can hardly imagine how this can happen.. no offence.. but how is it possible that the board hit you at your forehat under the helmet and you did not look back?.. (are you sure that it was your board? )

Board traveled behind and parallel, and hit me with a slight angle above my right eyebrow
I bet its harder to imagine how this could be funny

Like i wrote "no offence" and sorry if I made you angry.

I think the advice of Bracuru is very helpfull, tho with straps its not so easy get away from the foil asap. There are so many ways of crashing, in the beginning I also was some kind of magnetic to the foiland board but somehow I'm loosing that.. like Plummet wrote, hard to explain, i'm falling further away from the board, give it a twitch.. but can be luck as well.. I will get myself a new helmet one of these days..
The carbo way looks interesting to me too.

on a hydrofoil it's not how you crash that matters it's spotting the board. If you can see the board it's actually pretty easy not go get a cut that needs stitches, you just move your head a little bit to keep it from hitting you hitting you really hard. Sometimes it's impossible to spot the board for one reason or another, then you got to just ball up protect everything with your arms, and hope for the best. I think if can try to get in the habit of looking for the board first thing when you know you're going to crash. My buddy had the exact same thing happen to him, he had a very gentle crash lost track of the board and it nailed him just under the helmet line got a bunch of stitches. If he had seen it coming, he would have been fine.

Keep the kite not just flying, but powered up to pull you away from the board.

exactly what I do now, :thumb:
when I can
but I never use one one arm to break my fall anymore, just hold on and watch the kite if possible.
my shoulders stopped hurting many months after I stopped putting my arm out to break my fall,
thank goodness, as I thought permanent damage had been done. :accident:
