Just plain old surfer’s ear. Ear peeled forward and exostoses drilled away. Now facing up to 3 months off the water while it heals. Oh yes - and then there’s the other ear to do.

Ear plugs. Wear them.

No not yet. My left ear had become very uncomfortable and impossible to clear water or anything else like ear drops.

It's worth noting that the symptoms you might experience with Surfer's Ear depend not only on the size of the exostoses, but on their exact shape, and the way things get trapped. In fact the exostoses in my right ear (as yet unoperated on) are very slightly larger than they were in my left , and yet I still got the left one done first, as that was the ear with all the problems.

In my checkup to see how the healing of the drum was going the ENT asked "do you spend time in cold wind frequently?" I asked "do I have surfers ear?" She said yes....its not a problem but you do have some of that....I will be wearing plugs going forward for this as well now I guess.

When I was learning to foil I found when I busted ass on the foil I seemed to from time to time hit in a way that affected my ear. One bail I felt like I busted my eardrum but didn't. It seems busts on foil hit me very differently than on a tt. I ended up getting doc's pro plugs because I've already had several ruptured ear drums. They worked very well. Never a concern of them coming out or me rupturing an ear drum with them. Really only downside is you can't hear as well with them. If you're worried about your ear drums only the pro plugs are a good choice.

Strange to read this topic for me because some of you never heard about Surferears? almost everybody in the Netherlands wear them..

You can still hear everything fine, it is just when you wipeout, the oversized cap prevents the insert from going deep into your ear. They are designed for diving, and are inexpensive. I've tried other products like Doc Pro Plugs, and Macks AquaBlock and they don't even come close.

Those aren't vented. So that means they'll keep water from getting in your ear but if you fall on your ear the pressure won't equalize and you blow an eardrum.

I have treated my surfers ear by RIGOROUS drying after sessions - paper towel rolls and hair dryer asap. I was having big issues with it - but prevention is key IMO
