180 Tack, Toe-Side back to Heel-Side

Postby oregonkiter » Thu Jul 26, 2018 4:32 pm

So, after hundreds of attempts, I have my 180 tack Heel to Toe mostly down now. And, of course, the key was THE KITE. Going to start to unwind now, with Toe back to Heel 180's, with right foot in front on toe-side, for now.

A few important tips? Guessing it's mostly about sending kite far enough, and early enough in new new direction as you go into the rotation?

Thanks!

Are you looping the kite?

Not yet, no. I am assuming that I should?

I found it easier to learn this maneuver with ample power and without looping. Once you get the timing you can go with a smaller kite, which requires more critical timing, and incorporate a loop.

Had a pretty good session last week. Just really started nailing the timing on my one decent tack: heel to toe port side. Clued into trying to mimic the timing and pace on the other tack. Thee ten in a row of the comfy tack and then right into the toe side version. Pretty surprised to make the first couple I tried. Applied the same to the starboard heel to toe and rode out of that one too. Went from one type to three types Ina single session by focusing mostly on maintaining the timing and pace of the one tack I could do consistently.

I kinda sorta got one yesterday--toe to heel 180. Plopped in water, but was in right position and able to dive kite to get back up, so I will count it as one for now...

Was told by Fred--Wonder Foiler--Hope, to exaggerate the "C shape" with your body, the C being bending backwards, standing very tall, and of course sending the kite into the new direction early and sheeting out fully while starting the rotation.

I need to do about 1000 more, but seems doable now with lots and lots of practice.

I also find that heel to toe 180's are almost a daily reset for me. Some days I will nail all of them, others, especially on 4/5m kites, my timing is off and they are much more challenging. All part of the fun!

So much easier with enough power to lean into.
