slingshot H2 or H4 for learning jibing and tacking

Postby wil » Mon Jul 30, 2018 2:26 am

Hi,

Very interested to find out which of the Slingshot H2 or H4 are best for learning jibing and tacking. I am an intermediate foiler and can jibe on the water 80%). Now want to get to stage where I can comfortably jibe above the water

I ride the H2. It’s definitely way more stable than the H5/hoverglide wing. Not sure if it will help you land more tacks/gybes but it’s low speed stability may help with that. It was night and day difference in my progression learning to foil. I’m still learning gybes though.

I only have experience tow foiling behind a jetski in preparation for learning to kite foil.

I've had 6 sessions on the H4 and only 1 session on the H2. Every session has been on the 24" mast and a SUPfoil board. My impression is that the H4 is much more stable and turny. My friend who has been learning with me shares that opinion.

My first 3 sessions were on the H4. I'm goofy but I made sure to also ride switch. My 1st session, I spent most of the time figuring out how to stop breaching. Once I sorted that out I was doing little S turns goofy and switch. My 2nd session I felt very comfortable in flight and was crossing the wake goofy and switch and doing wide sweeping S turns I did attempt some jibes on my strong side (goofy to switch) that were unsuccessful but the carve entry felt really good. Of course it all went to shit once I tried to switch my feet (ha ha!). My 3rd session I managed to get one jibe (not flying).

My first and only session on the H2 (having already done 3 sessions on the H4) felt much more uncomfortable. It felt very skittish in comparison and I needed more front foot pressure which felt awkward. I did do some little S turns but wasn't even going to attempt a jibe. I also did not attempt to ride switch due to not being comfortable.

After that I decided to stick to the H4 and have had 2 more sessions. I've gotten 2 more jibes on my good side and been attempting them on my bad side. I've also been attempting tacks. It's been really fun banking the board over really hard and feeling the G forces of the carve and the subsequent lift on the front of the board due to the foil.

My suggestion based on somewhat limited experience is that the H4 wing would be much more suitable to work on gybes. I think it's telling that Slingshot has replaced the H5 with the H4 in their hover glide package.

Very interesting comments from ladomi. All the information from Slingshot suggest that the H2 is more stable. Keen to hear from others whether they have found the same

FYI: The old Slingshot H4 is now called the Space Skate 65, which is the new stock wing for the 2019 Hoverglide kitefoil kit. The new HG kit also comes stock with a shorter ~28" mast. There must be something good about that H4 for SS to use it as the stock HG wing...

I think H4 plus 28" mast is a certain way of getting more people into foiling.
H2 however seems to be a bit more universal if you decide have only one wing and not H5/H4 combo

I ride all the SS foils and wings a lot and know them very well.

Both the H2 (new Gamma 2019 foil) and H4 (Space Skate) are higher lift foils and very stable. I'd actually give the overall nod to the H2 (Gamma) for stability. It's wider.

Both are very stable and early lift foils, but go about it differently. H2 is wider and longer and very lifty. H4 is less long, but fatter, but also very high lift.

Due to the H4 being less wide and fatter, the H4 or Space Skate is quicker from edge to edge, but both will be good for learning transitions, tacking and jibing.

If, however, you are doing touchdowns during these, these foils will want to hop back up sooner than the H5 (time code 57). Sometimes having LESS lift is easier if you are still working on your footwork and touching down. You can skim across the water faster without foiling. Having the right speed often helps in these maneuvers. Not too fast and not too slow.

If you are looking for a better foil for above the water footwork, pick the one that fits your riding style more. I think the H2 is less tippy overall.

Honestly? I like all 4 foils from SS (I think the H1 is a myth), but the H2, H3, H4 and H5 and new 2019 models are all really fun for different reasons.

Hope this helps.

Good to know, because right after I bought a H2 three weeks ago, as a more stable wing option to go along with my H5, I found out about the Space Skate/H4. I had buyer's remorse and thought I had screwed-up. I'll just keep blinders on, to keep gear lust under control, and ride the H2 a while. I need stability at this point on the learning curve...

Isn't a myth of H1 supposed to become reality of TimeCode 68? I think I already saw that wing on a video

A significant plus of why to choose 2018 series over 2016/2017 wings is the little dull wnglet which will certainly save feet and kites from deep painful cuts.

Go Slingshot, go! (and please produce a prettier fuselage finally)
