Water in my Lift Mast - possible fix

Postby BigSky » Sat Sep 01, 2018 4:19 pm

Hello, I'm looking for some help from the collective. I love my Lift mast and wings. Lately I've been getting water in my mast, enough to hear it move back and forth down the trailing edge chamber. There are no visible dings or scratches. Any ideas?

I’m having the same problem. I can take off the wing and jerk the mast up and down and little water drops come out, but I can’t get it all out. Some of it sounds like it stuck up high in the mast. I emailed Lift last week for advice. I’ll post it once they get back to me.

I didn’t mean to preempt discussion of this topic. If anyone has any suggestions, I am all ears. I still haven’t hear back from Lift. I sent them another email yesterday.

Below is what I was directed to do. I never did it. I meant to re-seal the leaking screw attachment point.

"A very simple solution would be to drill a small hole in the bottom and a small hole in the top. 1/8” diameter. Then it can fill and release no problem and it would be clean. The cavity inside is small.
See attached images. They should help with the location of theholes. Use a 1/8" drill bit. You will feel it once you drill into the cavity."

Thanks for posting. Is this the advice you got from Lift? Also, was this for the 2017 mast (i.e., the one with the single-wing attachment)?

Yes, that was from Lift for the 2017 model year. I had both 28 & 36" masts leaking just enough to hear it sloshing.
The idea of encouraging more water to enter seemed ludicrous to me.
The leakage seemed to be at one of the fuselage attachment points. The forward one? I just never bothered attempting an actual repair. I considered plumbers putty or something similar.

This is a fair point, but I’m concerned about added weight. I don’t really have a sense of whether that concern is justified. I can’t tell how much water is in the mast or whether it is really making a difference in the weight of the mast.

Quality issue / reject
I'd go straight back to Lift or to Nick directly and treat it as a faulty piece. Water has nothing to do inside carbon and whatever foam guys put inside the mast is obviously didn't bond under carbon well.

Re: Water in my Lift Mast - fixed it

Okay, it appears I found a fix. For my fix I removed the screws and the barrel nut. There are no threads keeping the barrel nut in there. On the mast I taped the end where the screw enters and one end of the empty barrel nut hole. I mixed up enough 5 minute epoxy to completely fill both holes and used a brush to make sure it hit everything. I then removed the tape from where the screw enters and slowly let the epoxy mostly run out. I insert the barrel nut then tightened the screw. Once the epoxy cured I used a soldering iron to heat up the top of the screw to allow the screw to back out. Voila. I used the foil yesterday and no water.

I think I had a crack in the plastic where the wing attaches. If I'm being honest I did make pretty good contact with a rock while up on foil so that may be the cause, not QC on Lift's part. I too contacted Lift over a week ago and I'm disappointed no one is responding. I wasn't looking for a replacement after using the mast for 2 years but I was looking for a response and some suggestions. I really like Lift as a company and I've enjoyed their products but this does change my perception. Starting to think Moses for my next setup. Cheers.

Thanks. Just sent you PM for a little more info.

I’m also disappointed in the customer service. I have emailed them twice now and it’s almost been 2 weeks.
