Learning process - onda or 590? (Moses gear)

Postby twig » Sun Sep 02, 2018 1:36 pm

Hi
Im new to foiling and still positive about it, hoping for a not too long learning curve :D
I just got a new hydrofoil with board, Vorace 101 with a 558 wing, 330 stab and a the board is a Groove kiteboard.

First time out I was at a hydrofoil course and got to try the onda 633 with a 60cm mast.
After 2 hours of crashing I could sometimes foil around 20 - 30 meters with a bit of dolphin effect. not very stable but atleast I got positive about foiling.

Now on my current gear, 101 with w558 I found it a bit hard to learn, though the only time Ive tried I was underpowered so it never really worked.

Im thinking about getting a w590 wing since its a wing that should help me to learn faster and hopefully I would get rid of 5 -10 sessions of crashing and be more at the state of riding around unstable at first and then slowly getting it.

I have never tried the 590. How is a 590 compared to a 558 wing? is there a big difference?

The onda seems to be a very good wing but I dont think I can spend another 800 euros for the stab and fuselage+wing.
However is the Onda the ultimate wing to learn on? far easier then the 590?

Special idea:
Have anybody tried to get the onda attatched to the normal kite fuselage with a big shim and long screws?(attatching 2 holes only) could that be an idea or just stupid?

I guess that with my experience of trying the onda I could just go for a 590 and it would be easy enough to continue with.

Whats your experience?

Thanks!

Far easier and its not "school" wing only. I for sure will continue on ONDA as long as they make something better. Not true if you are aiming for speed and racing then just stick to vorace and be patient

I have 550 ( learned on it 2 years ago), the 590 ( one season on it) and bought 633 set up last month. I'm on fluente 93cm mast.
Get the 633. No question. get the 590 later. (You may never get it)
That said the 590 will be fairly big improvement. I've not ridden the 558, but gap between 550 and 590 is "10" then gap 590-633 is "20". 633 is huge difference.
You'll be up and going on the 633 easier than 590.
Your 101 mast is more difficult than the short mast of 60cm. Stick with it!

633 would be the easiest overall but only when it is trimmed out correctly.....requires a board with tracks and weight very forward compared to the Moses wings and fuse designed for kiting vs surf/sup. If you are using a fixed point Moses board or a board without tracks I would get the 590.

558 is “the need for speed” wing. Goes up at speed and stalls when trying to go slow.

590 is better but not as much as 633. Large wings are hot and wanted. You can try 683S wing maybe which matches same fuselage/stabilizer as 633. But in your situation 590 is the most affordable change.

You might be able to find a 548 wing cheap which is closest to 590

And tell whoever suggested you to buy 558 that it was a dick move to suggest 2016 design fast wing to a beginner.

Hi,

I had the 548 wing and found it basically identical to the 550.
I've found my strapless position on my board comparing 590 and 633 to very close. Perhaps about 50mm forward in general. I move around depending on wind, direction, and if I have sea grass hanging on the wing...
