Upgrading my Double Agent

Postby Richard81 » Mon Sep 17, 2018 1:29 pm

I've been on a Double Agent for a couple of years and am looking for something a bit more advanced.
I can gybe, though foiling tacks are somehow escaping me, can back and front roll and really enjoy a good big jump every now and then.
Any advice on what foil to get, ideally it would fit the screw pattern on my Double Agent to save some £££.
There is no racing scene here so I'm not interested in a full race kit just something to keep pushing me and maybe help me jump higher.

Racing foils jump higher than any freeride orientated ones ;)

Latest models are not that hard to ride and any other foil will feel completely different compared to the slow unstable and draggy double agent. Don't know about the hole spacing, but the standard is 165*90mm

I think it has the standard spaceing.
If I go race foil will I lose a bit on the bottom end of my wind range?

Double agent board is 140x90mm

It would be great if it were 165x90 :(

Probably. Race foils are usually somewhere in the 570-620 sq cm range, so from a physics standpoint you need to replace some of the lift of a larger wing with more speed. I've found that if you just size up your kite appropriately, it doesn't really matter that much, except for having to fly a bigger (slower) kite. The thing with race foils is more their aspect ratio versus their size, because they're so high aspect they usually need to move a bit before lifting.

That said, if you want to learn how to tack and boost really high, you'll want to be going fast with a big kite anyway so it's all part of the larger strategy as Evan said.

The problem with the original Double Agent is that it was just so entry-level that basically everything is going to be/feel better regardless of what you go with. Many enjoy the modular abilities of the Moses setup, you can buy 1 mast/fuse and basically go from surf pumping to racing by just changing wings. I'm getting my second Delta Hydrofoil built right now, it's as fast as a Mike's Lab, half the price, made by hand in the USA and extremely easy to ride.

Again, as Evan said, race foils are probably the easiest to ride at this point because they're so over-engineered. The surf foils are slower so people probably feel like they're easier, but if you just send it, can't do better than a modern race setup.

You can always drill another pair of holes at 165mm. I have a Moses foil and love it. This was my upgrade from a beginner foil.

I did drill two extra holes at the back to bolt a Zeeko (B&W, Carver, then Spitfire) foil on it. Big cup washers and 8mm bolts, washers and hex nuts and it was great.
That board is nice low volume, bomb proof, and still reasonably usable on its own without a foil. Good option for travelling. Could be a tad stiffer, but still works.

Anyone tried the new Cabrinha foils? The Speed might be a way to get a higher aspect foil without getting a new board
