Waring on Foil Mount adhesive

Postby NYKiter » Fri Oct 12, 2018 8:28 pm

Secured my foil to a board using 3M VHB - pretty sure its the same stuff for the foil mount system...held up great for several long sessions...

Today It tore loose on a wave and scuttled my foil - to the bottom it went...

I even had a stainless wire cable as a redundancy - broke it clean off....

Looks like the 3M simply sheared in half and not at the adhesion surfaces....

:o you taped a foil to the bottom of a board and expected it to stay there?! I don't even trust VHB to mount my Trace sensor, let alone a foil?!

Mounting surface size?

The foilmount spreads the load over a large area. If you used the same adhesive only on the foil mounting plate, the area would be much smaller, and the stresses much higher.

If that's the case I am surprised it held for more than one session.

A stupid way of thinking nonetheless, even if the tape was strong enough, big chance you rip the surface laminate straight off the bottom of the board with concentrated forces of only the mast-plate to spread the load.

Good point. It divided lengthwise so it decided to shear long ways.

Hi NYKiter,

sorry to hear you lost your foil. Apart from what the others said, I would not say that foilmount is something forbidden to be used. But I just have never seen the price to function value, as every shaper will add you solid tracks for that price without loosing the old foilless ability of your board ...

And there has already been somebody here telling the same story that foilmount comes off with time... just can't find the topic.

But everybody should know that there are many foil connecting parts that are able to break, just see pictures here on the end
http://forum.oase.com/showthread.php?t=173632

So a well dimensioned safety line should be a must.
I use a covered 500 daN line that is conneced to backstrap that way that even when the fist fundament of strap breakes the secound will keep it.

Therefore this part of your story sounds more interesting for the others to learn from if our safey lines are dimensioned cortectly. I also heard from people breaking mount and safety line but because it was obviosly too weak.

So do you have a picture of your broken stainless steel wire?
Thanks for sharing

Here are some images of the setup. I mounted the foil to the rear of an old moses board. I do prefer foils as far back as possible. You can see the large mounting plate similar to the one that I was using. Anyhow, the ring was the failure point on the redundancy....not sure how that much force could have opened the ring up but it did...could have been the alum pin tore open as it probably wasn't designed for a load yadayada....plate is bigger than the foil...but not as big as the commercial foil mounts probably...yadayada....I have a PhD but Im not an engineer so....whatever...tough lesson....

Doesn't look that much bigger than the plate of the mast, way too little surface area so no surprise the tape couldn't handle the stresses.

Those key-rings are indeed not made to hold any significant load. Tough lesson indeed, I hope someone learns from it so they donn't make the same mistake.

thank you for sharing, I'm experimenting with different setups myself.
we can all learn from your experience
