Moses T38 vs T22

Postby Tom Tom » Fri Oct 19, 2018 6:11 pm

With reference to https://www.facebook.com/15984339737619 ... 851355425/

Want to complement my T40 with a shorter board and try to decide if I should go full pocket board T22 of 106cm or stay a little longer on T38 of 128cm with tracks and straps option. I freeride with a 550 or 633 setup, no serious stuff, still learning. The T22 seems to have a standard bolt setup, plus a more rearward one I guess is for the 633 Onda balance.

Thinking the T22 will give me the compact take-anywhere great for travel kit and flying carpet feeling. This vs options of straps, adjustability/trim of the tracks and foot straps if I feel like it. Plus at least a chance of sawing it if one touches down at speed.

What do you think? 106cm too short or the way to if one wants that true flying carpet feeling?...

Tomtom,
I'm riding a homemade 120cm strapless with 633. Works fantastic. Very similar to T38. Tried my 590 on it and it was no problems.
But I went back to 633 after just 10 minutes. ( was on 550 for 50 hours, 590 for 50 hours, 633 for 50 hrs in that order).
For 633, I will build a 105cm this winter.

Travelling: 128 or 106 makes no difference...

Thanks Tom, so focusing on the 633 riding you’d like to go down to something like the T22? For agility I presume? I have never tried a really short board but feel that is the way to go just based on the concept.

I think I would argue a 105’ish board is so short it will slip into normal luggage like a bigger bag making it really a non-issue to pack, while the 128 kind of gets the special bag treatment.

I have two Moses 128 boards, one has much thicker rails than the other which has very thin rails, so they are different volumes, yesterday the slightly less volume 128 board was subject to very light wind with small kite test, 8mtr in 10-12 mph fickle breeze.
I was happy to discover this did not flag up any problems, a real world test being very under powered and needing to get going out in deep water, conditions I have been in many times when on holiday at Flag beach on Furteventura, (Gunners playground)
multi loops heading off down wind a few times when the wind really was marginal,
the board proved very stable under water and on the surface rising gently without problem, with the Onda 633 wing on of course,
I am no lightweight at 95kg.

Hej Tomtom,

The difference in agility between my 135 and 120 cm board is astounding. Only 300g difference.
Considerations: The 633 pops right up from zero. I'm not touching down very much after 150 hrs flying. flying Transitions are secure.
So I think I can use a 100-105 board and get more agility, less weight. Travel friendly. No tradeoffs.
For 590 and 550 wing it will not work well.

A few friends down here at my level of riding have tried my 633 on 120 board. They ride 145 boards and alpine + Lf Impulse foils. They were super impressed, didn't want to trade back during session !! they felt it was so agile it was" nervous ". But I'm used to it. Like a go-cart.

I am one of those who find the short ones too short...

115-125 is an outstanding lenght for average weights overall riding in "anything" (except really light wind where you need bigger boards).

Shorter, you get so many disadvantages IMO, that I personally dont find it good, not even with huge surf wings.

Others have a different view, but I got mine - the very short and lifted "nose" in front of your feet, really gives you so many advantages in terms of being able to touch down easy in waves, in chop, when starting, when landing jumps, when making a mistake, when hitting a lull in a maneuver, when dragging out with the board, etc.

And when that short, I dont find any noticeable difference in swing weight - so I think it is more a mental distraction if one find the 120 cm ones "slow" ha haa :naughty:

Dont listen to me if I am the only one saying even a short nose gives loads of advantages - but for me, it really does

If you can pack a 105 cm board down for travel, and you do this a lot, well, then you have answered your own question.

You also got the T40 for normal lighter winds anyways.

But as said, I dont like the supershort ones.....

Jumping with smaller boards is great, so losing the option to mount straps is also a downside, besides you will find a nose helps noselandings, and assume you only bring one board when travelling, so would take the T22 (or at least something with that length) so you dont only bring a supersmall board on trips, and nothing but that

@tomtom
Go for the pocket board! Specialy if you keep the T40.
I ride the Ghostwhisper 91 (Front 633) and the Dwarfcraft 3'6 (106cm). It is such a perfect match. I usualy ride a racefoil/board. But since I bought the GW91 I took out my old pocket board to give it a try. The next weekend I went to the coast I only took the GW91 and the pocket board.
No, 106cm is not too short!

Enjoy the flying carpet...

I have been riding the 106 cm Kanaha Shapes board as my only board with my Cloud 9 S24 surf foil for the last few months. No issues with the 106 cm board in winds for my 3.7m to 10.4m Clouds.

With the surf foil I have no issues getting started as long as there is enough wind to keep my Cloud kite parked overhead.

I was out in really marginal winds yesterday on my 8m Cloud. Wind dropped and I had no issues getting started when I could keep the kite parked overhead.

Once I had to actively fly the kite to keep it overhead my session was over.

Thanks for excellent input. Taking into consideration I am just getting started and still have to master flying gibes, I believe the T38/633 will be a good complement to the T40/550 that I ride today.

Only thing I am pondering at the moment is rocker of the T38. Heard tons of good stuff (specifically concerning rocker) about the Groove Skateboard. The T38 (actually custom by Newind) is a veriy different animal, that also seems to work really well :-/

So now just to decide T38 or Skate?....

Skate is the perfect board for 633 ...sure.
