Yesterday, Sunday 4 November 2018, the Annual General Meeting of World Sailing confirmed the final line-up of events for the Paris 2024 Olympic Sailing Competition.

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) is made up of delegates from member national authorities (MNA), with each MNA entitled to one vote.

Although a decision was made in May 2018, World Sailing's Regulations allow both the Events and Equipment to be amended at the 2018 Annual Conference by World Sailing's Council before ratification at the AGM.

The AGM was invited to debate and vote on a proposal from the World Sailing Council meeting of 1 November 2018 to include a new Mixed Keelboat Offshore event. This proposal was approved by the AGM who confirmed the final 2024 Olympic events/equipment line-up as follows:

Men’s Windsurfer – RS:X
Women’s Windsurfer – RS:X
Mixed Kite – equipment evaluation (new event)
Men’s One Person Dinghy – Laser
Women’s One Person Dinghy – Laser Radial
Mixed Two Person Keelboat Offshore - equipment evaluation (new event)
Mixed Two Person Dinghy – equipment evaluation (new event - 470)
Men’s Skiff – 49er
Women’s Skiff – 49erFX
Mixed Multihull – Nacra 17
*RS:X and Laser/Radial are subject to anti-monopoly review

Equipment Criteria for Mixed Kiteboarding:
Board concept: Foiling
Weight range men: 65-85kg
Weight range women: 50-70kg
Kite size for Men: 7-21 m2.
Kite size for Women: 7-21 m2.
Kite system: RAM-Air (foil-kite)
Number of permitted kites per event: 4 high performance, high aspect ratio kites
Number of permitted hydrofoil systems per event: 1 high performance, high aspect ratio hydrofoil system
Same hydrofoil system, board and kites scheme for men and women.

Suitable wind range for competition: 5-40 knots

Builder / Class structure: Registered Series Production Scheme with multiple licensed builders. All equipment within a model/series must be identical, and must be available worldwide without restrictions. World Sailing, in close cooperation with the class, manages the control of builders and licenses equipment.

Format proposal: Various options, including:
Short Track Relay on a short windward/leeward course, with team members (male and female) covering laps alternating, with a changeover zone. Competition may consist of an opening series in heats and a knockout stage or other form of final (i.e. best of x race wins).

Other Equipment considerations: The proposed registered series production equipment scheme is fully supported by sailors, the industry and the wider kiteboarding community over a one-design solution and reflects the IOC “urban sports” vision with variety of equipment similar to what is common in snowboarding, skateboarding and surfing. Equipment will be “frozen” per Olympic cycle to ensure confidence and reliability in equipment investment while ensuring controlled evolution from one Olympic cycle to the next. The selected class should be run by a well-established worldwide class authority with well-developed class rules following the ERS and SCR format.

The confirmed equipment criteria describe exactly the IKA Formula Kite class and allows for a first time that different models from different manufacturers can compete against each other on an Olympic level playing field.

“The International Kiteboarding Association is very excited to see kiteboarding included in the 2024 Olympic Games after we made our debut in the Youth Olympics in Argentina earlier this year.” said Mirco Babini, President of the International Kiteboarding Association.

“We want to thank everyone in the various committees, council and AGM as well as the world wide kiteboarding community for their support and are looking forward to showcase this exciting discipline of sailing in the Olympic Games." he concluded.

Markus Schwendtner, Executive Secretary of the International Kiteboarding Association added that “it has been a long journey for us to come to this point. Through all the years it was always our goal to keep the whole community and industry involved and not to go down the single manufacturer / one design road. In the Youth Olympic Games we had 'registered series production equipment' for the first time, and it was a great success. I am very happy that we have also achieved this as the equipment criteria for Paris 2024 - Formula Kite will ensure that we retain the spirit and identity of kiteboarding, and keep everyone involved.”

I have a stack of kite magazines on my desk and 8 years old issue has shiny race pics of formula boards under LEI wings.

In just 1 last year lots of minds got set right that large foil wings are awesome and right choice for playing in the swell and general fun freeride.

It’s nice to see that kitesurfing is being seen as a sport by whoever those organizations are but it certainly will change as a sport, as discipline and equipment in next 6 years.

Whatever future brings it will be a change. A change for better and a matter of choice of free minds and free people. So far we have wakestyle/race/waveriding/TT:freestyle/bigair and foil freestyle is emerging in its astonishing beauty. Let there be more riding!

Pretty narrow weight range. It's not obvious to me that there is much advantage to being small (or big), the kite is supporting most of the weight anyway.
I have no idea how you would manage and police the transition zone. I would rather see a competition of individuals rather than mixed doubles. If only one medal is on offer, and given that some of the fastest kite racers in the world are women, maybe men and woman should be racing together? Is strength an advantage at that level of competition?

4 registered Enata kites and a foil and board $16 000 US

What a bunch of absolute kooks, destroying opportunities for affordable sport.

The comparison to skateboarding of the equipment as an urban sport is absolutely sickening and an insult.

Just as I said all along, they talk talk talk... affordable for youth, 3rd world countries, a 50/50 gender split... but at the end of the day they are money grabbing low lifes not to be trusted.

Another generation of unnecessary snobby classist based sport where the only young competitors will be trust funders or sponsored, and where equipment is far more a factor than pure skill in winning, than so many othe
Hopefully this will go to IOC and they will see the blatent contradictions of their mission statements vs the reality of tjis proposal.

As for mixed relay, what planet are they on exactly?

Enata? Wtf are you on?

It’s all about mike don’t you know?

Put the price up of a 49er a mixed keel boat, nacra.

16k is cheap.

Kiteboarding self determination is the answer ( self governance), as it always was.

Then we wont need to have classist arguments over whether $16 000 is cheap by comparing to another sport... sailing.

The Earth :)
One you see it you might change opinion.
It was tested during the Polish Championship last August.
Nobody new what will be the outcome and...
Riders loved it. Public loved it. Judges loved it. Organisers loved it.
Pure rock&roll. No joke! The best part of the race was a rely change. what fun and emotions!

I believe that this is the best solution (having only one medal) and a milestone in kiteracing.
It will change the sport for good.
And it creates one possible and incredible scenario: mother and son competing in one team in the Games! I would love it so much! Would you believe it?

Congratulations to IKA for achieving the final goal. It was a long bumpy and disappointing road with one sailing generation lost.
Now can be only better. Great achievement that IKA pushed 4 year cycle for the gear. We are not going to end up like RSX.
Good job Marcus, Mirco and the board. Super well done.

An entry level LEI with control system, harness, board, and safety equipment costs north of $2k. Add a few more kites then add the premium of being high performance race equipment designed to win a world title and it's probably pretty close to what Enata and others are currently charging. Kiting isn't cheap dude, sailing isn't cheap, windsurfing isn't cheap, shit...even surfing isn't cheap nowadays with the composite boards they're riding.

You come in Every.Single.Thread about the Olympics and throw a tantrum that people won't be able to afford Olympic kiting equipment in the 3rd world. Um...excuse me, what the f*** are you talking about? Entry level twintip/LEI setups are already outrageously expensive compared to sneakers, soccer balls, cricket bats, etc.

What is your actual point? That kiting shouldn't be in the Olympics at all because it's expensive? Are you trying to argue that only the cheapest version of kiting should be considered for the Olympics? Do you think people really want to win an Olympic medal on a Liquid Force Solo and a twin tip?

Are you just pissed because the Olympic format isn't wakestyle? What is your actual grievance here?

16k is too much indeed.
Should be cheaper, specially to make it equal for poorer talents like in DR.

Not sure about mixed, but love the idea of my and son Bridges going for it 👍🏻

Relay is awesome...we had at the Kite Show Cumbuco 2008 a TT downwind relay...4 riders on beach, then fast out to one ton, then back towards beach thru a finish line, then next of team starts.
Great fun for everyone...most exiting kite races I saw in my life.
