The poor talents from the DR? Those same guys that won the youth games gold? That hired a top Spanish racer Florian trittel totrain and coach them?

While there is a financial gap between the DR and Europe I think you do a disservice to the natural ability that clearly shone through

And 16k for a competitive Olympic class is cheap.

Track bikes, riifle shooting, archery, wheel chair racing biathalon, bob sleigh or any of the other sailing classes all have a high dependency on equipment and far higher costs than a foil racing set up

Coaching, travel, lost income from not working, etc - these are the main costs of competing at a high level in any sport. The foiling equipment annual cost is modest by comparison especially since designs are stabilizing and gear is holding its value. Does the value of a used Mike’s even go down?

If you knew for a fact that the previous owner had done well on it by tuning/optimizing it, you might argue that it would go up. For example, would you pay more than Mike's list price for a new setup if you knew you could buy Nico Parlier's exact strut/wing combination he used at his most recent tour win? Would that be meaningful compared to a "regular" production model?

I guess it all comes down to obsolescence, because the carbon seems to last forever. Like most things where designs stabilize, prices of new will hopefully start to come down or stop increasing at least.

Anyway, I think we are going to see big growth in local foil racing now, it’s just so much fun to train and race on the hydrofoil especially when compared to something like grinding it out on a Laser.

kitesurfing offers the opportunity of a lot of performance without this kind of excessive expense that parents have to pick up.

i dont support any sports that are equipment performance dependent, where the costs involved are a huge barrier to participation for youth and where we will see only the privileged few have the opportunities of getting involved, leading to classism within a sport ( as is going on here right now telling us that $16 000 is cheap). Parents pick up the bills for their own and their childrens ambitions.. how can they afford this? it is totally against iocs prerequisites

the most budget kitesurfing equipment would smoke rsx

Nearly all professional surfers still use polyurathane surfboards fyi

A 4 year equipment registration cycle willl have a devastating effect on affordability also, the depreciations involved with the sports equipment will be become abhorrent.

Ma$$ive con job.Why arnt there any non sponsored, non government funded parents with kids involved in kiting sticking up for this? Because there are none. .. and as for gender balance.. kite racing and gender balance... that is an oxymoron.

It will end up like this... a privileged few families will be able to afford to put little bobby onto the olympic training program for their country. They wont want to be riding budget equipment as there are no barriers to riding the $16k equipment, so what is the point on training on different equipment. its a minimum if 8 years for an olympic campaign so they may eventually go through 2 cycles of extra equipment.. so that will be $48 000 (US) worth of equipment to remain competitive over that time. Adverts will appear ( already happened) asking for competitors to practice against as little bobby has none.

Meanwhile autonomous kiteboarding groups worldwide continue to be legally threatened by World Sailing for declaring a wave riding, or freestyle event a world championship event.. a great way to get kiteboarders offside.

Kiteboarding was autonomous long before World $ailing stuck their nosey greedy beak in.

I guess a lot of elite sport equipment is expensive and most of 6 years old expensive kite equipment is pretty outdated and not top notch.

Speaking of good riders - both poor and rich - as long as they rock they’ll be supplied gear to ride. And for “scary” numbers - a year of daycare for a toddler in US is easily $9000 (and that’s cheap) so $12000 of equipment doesn’t seem to be that much for a working person.

Let regulators regulate and play their money flutes.

Let’s us ride and stay happy.

BTW who is World Sailing and what authority they have over yours and mine kitesurfing? I’ve seen enough IKO card “business” so I guess there’s always someone who’s in it for the money...

For training and being competitive you don't need to have the absolute newest gear, only if you need that final few percent of performance to gain a podium in a competitive field.

So much good second hand material available right now that you can pick up for less than €6000.- for a complete setup (4 kites, foil + board) that arguing about the price becomes a bit silly when you compare that to the prices of tubekites and twintips in the shops that are going through the roof lately.

I am really happy they chose the best gear with multiple manufacturers and not a dead end like one design. That is the same kind of money drain, but in total control of only one manufacturer and the rich countries buying dozens of sets to pick the best performing kit.

Why licensing? What safety? I want maximum performance of gear and people to be shown, I don’t care if they’re on steroids or if kite is one time use piece of equipment. WTF? Who are these people and organizations and what is a benefit? Is there “world running” for runners too?

Amount of bureaucracy - and also desire for regulations amongst riders is repugnant.

Agree, you need some serious cash to travel the world to international events. The benefit of kiting is you don't have to pay to ship a boat around the world.

The gear race has slowed down. Mikes lab has been the best hydrofoil for years. Is the new version (bullet 4) any better than the last version (bullet 3)? I know people are still buying bullet 3 because bullet 4 isn't IKA registered equipment yet. For the kites, the R1V2 was released over two years ago and is still winning international events.

$16k is the price for new stuff, but if you are going to the olympics, you're going to get sponsored and get all your gear for free!

If you want to start competing, you can be extremely competitive on $5k worth of gear. Get some lightly used R1V2 11m and 15m ($3k), a used board ($450), and a used Banga ($1800, Moses comets are only $1200), and you'd be very competitive in almost any fleet from 10 knots - 24 knots of wind (most races).
