Best foil to use it Strapless?

Postby orwell » Sat Nov 10, 2018 7:49 pm

Hello guys, i'm looking a foil to start strapless, which one on the market do you think it's the best?
I was looking at the new Slingshot HG with H1 or H2 wing or the Impulse from Liquid force.

Thanks !

I would say just choose the foil you want to ride and go for it. I learnt to foil strapless from the start and in 1.5 years I've tried maybe 6 free ride foils. They all felt fine strapless. I currently ride the original Slingshot Hoverglide with the H5 wing. Probably the heaviest foil on the market and the fastest sink rate. Even with those disadvantages, strapless riding is not a problem. The Slingshot foils work really well and have a great selection of wings now. I tried the new Infinity 76 surf/sup wing a few weeks back (1500cm2) and it was fantastic fun. I would say that what ever foil you choose, find one that offers a selection of wings - particularly a big fat surf wing.

Thanks Duke, i own an Spotz Tuna and i'ts really not the best to use it strapless, to go confortably you need to go at high speed. This is why i'm looking for something bigger.

What i don't know is if the weight matter, seems heavier the Slingshot.

Surf wings that float are the easiest strapless.

I wouldn't recommend the H2 due to its weight. It's a very heavy setup, I struggled with it strapped after coming from lighter aluminum masted setups.

Ives ridden Lf Impulse, Alpine xl - one short test each. Been riding Moses 550-590 and now 633.
633 is best of these 3, though all would work fine. They guys that owned those foils tried my 633 didn't want to trade back......

If it is for learning strapless, it is a dilemma.

The really big boards, both thicker and more area, are a lot faster to learn to ride as you can surface ride so much longer, makes an incredible difference.
On the other hand, the thinner and smaller boards tends to sit deeper in the water so you get more time and easier to waterstart.

A light mast is key, carbon foils are hugely advantageous in terms of making easy waterstarts when learning, as you got a lot more time than with heavier alu masts :D
A big wing which has more volume will also help in this respect.
