Large compact wings for surfing on a hydrofoil

Postby Regis-de-giens » Sun Nov 11, 2018 10:54 pm

I would like to launch a general discussion on the recent development of very large HF wings to be used in waves.

I bought a Ketos 1200 this summer and after a wired feeling of foiling so low during the first test-on-flat session, i must say I finally love the ability to follow slowly the waves cycles without just crossing them. More coherent.

Loved it , in light or stronger wind, a perfect combo with medium aspect foil kites IMO , highlighting the pleasure of climbing down the waves among surfers.

I’m riding a Levitaz Cruizer and 100 cm and really enjoy underpowered wave riding. Speed range 9-18 knots.

But I’m super impressed with the Ketos gear I’ve seen.

I’m curious what length mast you are using? And stabilize? The Also, do you wear a GPS? If so, what is the speed range?

Finally, does the 1200 connect to the same fuselage or do you need a differen one?

The Ketos 1200 fits the same fuselage yes, and you dont have to stand further forward than with the smaller wings, a big plus.

I use both 91 and 100 cm masts regularly with the 1200, quite often the 91 cm, as I use the 1200 more often in lighter winds where I dont need the 100 cm as much as when o/ut in high winds and more choppy bigger waves, where I use an 800 cm2 on a 100 cm mast for these windier conditions usually.

Sometimes when windier it is great just to rig down instead to a 3-4 m2 LEI kite, and use the big Surf wing :thumb:

I like to use a really small flat stab around 200 cm2 only, to make it really lively, but otherwise around 250 cm2 which gives a sweet fluid smooth tracking feel when you turn.

The small stab, 1200 cm2 surf wing, and the 118 cm pocketboard at my home break:

The Moses Onda 633 and the Ketos 1200 are the early ones, but a lot of others are around now.

Maybe we should list them, with their area and span?

This is my rig for riding surf. Only small waves so far, but it doesn't need much.
Span 77.5cm (I think), area 1500cm2.
Mast length 87cm.
Board is 97cm, homemade, and looking to make one a size smaller (probably around 80-85cm).
Really enjoying this setup.

How heavy is that KeNalu foil?

A little too heavy!
The front wing alone weighs 1.8kg. Don't know why it's so heavy.
So in total it's about 4.3 or 4.4kg.
You don't feel it on the water because the weight is over the center of gravity.
But it's not the setup for strapless air.
I have the smaller wing, the 580 as well. That wing weighs just under 1kg.
I'll probably ride that more on flat water, but I prefer the bigger wing in the waves.

My Axis 820 S-series... Great for catching lake swell and cruising around. 820mm span, just under 1500cm2. Pics are with the 90cm mast but I owe the 75 now. Board is 145x48, I'm thinking a pocket board is actually in my future too!

Wear a helmet! The Crusizer wing is heavy too. I suspect its solid carbon. The race wing is much lighter. The feedback helps as I am considering that KeNalu clearance looks nice in price.

It seems the first popular wings in this category were around 1100-1200 cm2. Now I see more people kiting on 1400-1500 cm wings. Mine is 1126 (LF Impulse). I wonder if a bigger wing will be even better for small waves.

I have only one mast, 90 cm; I would not use it with less because of the span of the wing, it gets out of the water quite early when you take some angle to take more speed; I think I was at about 18-20 knots one day with it (I was racing with a friend on a foilboat "Waszp", very fun);

What I love is the impressive ratio agility/lift at low speed ; the agility of the 1200 Ketos (Sup wing originally but indeed no need to adapt the Ketos mats) is comparable to a medium foil wing like the freeride basic; something that I had not on the higher ratio large wings (like Ketos Freeride XL): with my light weight and small feet, this is something important otherwise the carving is low and inefficient.

The bad consequence is a relatively low upwind angle and apparent wind speed , which gives a wire feeling in very light wind : you foil-up very early, ok, but when going through very low lulls you have to be more careful to keep planning compared to a higher ratio wing having more speed.
