Foils and board for Downwinders

Postby Obe_1 » Mon Nov 12, 2018 12:01 am

I am looking for a good foil set up favoring down wind riding in 12-22 knots of wind. Above that I will be riding TT.
I learned on a LF rocket fish which I still ride and know anything will be an upgrade from this set up. I am 72 Kg.

Down wind riding in swell is where I find my smiles. :D
I will be back in a location this winter with almost ideal down wind riding conditions, consistent side shore wind and swell and a 10 km beach area to land safely.

For foils I been leaning towards the Lift 170 Fish. I know that the Moses 633 is considered an outstanding foil but hear the Lift 170 may edge out it out for waves.
Also thinking about going with a 80 cm strut. Longer struts are without question the best option for upwind. I really don't mind riding a little flatter and just cruising over the waves upwind, if I pick up some advantage going down wind.
For boards either Kanaha Shapes or Groove skate. Depends on availability, knowing they are in demand, I may have to pick up something else.
Any thoughts and experiences on options that can handle extended down wind rides would be appreciated. Not interested in race equipment and foils.

Axis S-series 680, or 750 if you want more glide. You might find the 820 and bigger too much at your weight.

I'm on the 820 and 75cm mast, cruising on the swell is my thing too. Upwind is fine, you can lean it over enough to power upwind but really, just slow down and enjoy the ride at a shallower angle.

Here's a .gif of me noodling about in lake swell, in about 12 knots. Anything downwind going right to left, is me trying to surf the swell. Working on a movie too, but editing is boring

Since you are talking about the lift 170 fish could you tell what the difference between that and the regular 170 lift is .

They changed the tail of the fuselage to a flatter profile, more like a leaf spring, allowing the rear stabilizer more vertical compliance. Supposedly helps with pumping and turns. When viewed from the side the fish fuselage is much thinner, the classic is taller and narrow.
Its similar to what you see in the Cannondale XCross and Synapse carbon bikes on the rear chain stays.

Nice, I can almost see the happy face on the down wind legs! Thanks for the recommendation, I will have to take a look into these.
The fuselage and attachment on these look very well built. Any thoughts on the new 2019 MV Foil boards? I think the MV Free series (125) may be suitable.

Yeah, it's a hoot. The stability inspires confidence to try stuff too, and I since I got it I'm getting 90% of my feet changes on the foil, even my weak side :o

Haven't seen the MV in the flesh, hoping to get a demo ride in February, although I think the Kink is more my bag but worry it may be too short... Buddy in Oz bought one, and he likes it a lot. The photos show it's got chined rails, so it's not a skim board but a real foil board. He says it no less stiff than any other board he's used, too.

A lot options for long glides. You need enough speed to catch up to wave but not too much that you simply go blazing down at out of control speeds.

I like the naish surf thrust large, the XXLW spitfire and the fanatic aero 1500 (haven't tried the Axis yet). These all work well for downwinders and swell riding.

I use a 75/70cm mast (the mama bear mast).

I use a hover 155 (skim for 8/10 knot small swell days) and hover 130 (perfect nose as clip waves or have accidental touchdowns).

Try as many as you can.....
