Small modification to Moses T60 board idea - your thoughts?

Postby tkaraszewski » Thu Nov 15, 2018 1:28 pm

So I'm generally pretty happy with my Moses T60 carbon board. Here's a picture of it:

Image

You can see it has thru-holes for mounting the foil. Despite this being non-adjustable, I've been fine with it, and it should be less failure prone than rails in the bottom of the board. But it has one annoying problem:

Image

These screws are *super* uncomfortable when you stand on them. They're like having a rock in your shoe. It's really annoying to be foiling along trying to get your foot in a position where it doesn't feel like you've got something poking you in the bottom of the foot.

So, I was thinking about replacing the bots with countersunk ones. I'd have to countersink the holes in the top of the board, and I'm not sure if there's enough fglass/carbon there for this to be sturdy. I'd think that they'd have solid glass straight through where these bolts mount, and it should be fine, but I really don't want to have a countersink go right through the deck and into some foam core material.

Final picture of where I'd be countersinking:

Anyone know how these are built, and if the material around the bolts is solid? Anyone tried this modification before? I know it's minor, and I know it's a bit less strong, but if those bolts go through a big chunk of solid glass, there's no way I'd pull a countersunk screw all the way through the board.

I agree with the above, do not modify the board when there are so many more hardware options available. Whole world of different bolt heads out there. Simple switch, no mess with board.

I believe some of those options are called “sidewalk bolts” or “hurricane bolts” if that makes the search any easier.

My thoughts - probably not to be paid too much attention to - are that I wouldn't risk it. I'd look at bolts such as Grigorib has suggested. Preferably only with thread where it is needed, not necessarily fully treaded

It looks like what grigorib posted is called an "elevator bolt". Finding them in M6 and stainless is not proving to be real easy so far, and most of them seem to have a square neck that wouldn't fit on the board anyway.

I'll keep looking. The thing that makes it harder is the bolts have to fit not only the board, but the collared nuts that fit into the holes in the foil as well, or I need replacements for those in a different size, which are also hard to find.

I quite like the fact that I can feel the bolts as it lets me know where my foot is in relation to the mast without having to look down , ps Strapless rider

Some of the fasteners labeled “truss head” have a smoother and wider dome might work for you, and commonly come in m6 stainless.

I am one of the few that has seen inside the T60,
and seen the glass fibre posts bonded to the top and bottom skin of the board, the posts are single pillars of glass fibre sitting inside the open cell foam core,
The hole that the bolts slide into are simple drill holes straight through the center of the posts, the posts are around 25mm in diameter.
So as long as you don't damage the small overlap of board skin bonded to the bolt post you should be ok.
After seeing the posts removed from my T60 and replaced with tracks I would be very carefull not to break the bond between the top skin and the top of each post.
If you are handy with resins and bench tools then with this knowledge you should be ok.
If your a ham fisted looney with a big drill bit then leave it alone. :thumb:

Get some conical washers and countersunk screws. The washers are pulled down into the deck pad and you're left with a smooth flat surface to stand on. You can still feel them with your feet so you've got tactile feedback for foot placement.
