13/17m VS 11/15/19m

Postby WH Lithuania » Sun May 07, 2017 12:12 pm

Hey, could you post what quivers you prefer? Looks like 11/15/19m is very popular set, but I'm thinking maybe reduced quiver of only 13m and 17m would do the job for amateur race and freeride hydrofoil. I like smaller quiver as it's easier to decide which one to pull out. So when it's less wind it's obviously 17m, so I avoid long decisions is it a 15m or 19m day. I mostly ride in gusty lake winds, so sizing decisions are always ugly. I'm willing to have few bars with different line lengths.

I think a two kite quiver is great. With the original 2005 Speed my quiver was 7 and 17. It worked but the gap unpleasant because I was either underpowered or overpowered on most ideal days and I was happy on very windy or light days. Now I'm liking 8-10 and skipping the big kite days. I would pick two kites close in size where both would work for your most common ideal day. 11-15 or 13-17 sound like good choices in a lighter wind area. But 11-13 or 13-15 might be better. I can't imagine wanting to ride anything bigger than 15 unless a race I thought I would win or if I just wanted to ride in very very light wind.

Thanks Jake,

I'm 85kg and our lake conditions are really random. If it's light day wind can be 3-6m/s with random gusts up to 8-10m/s. I have 11m race foil, but it's definitely too small for me for light days as I only started to learn tacks. So the question is really what largest kite can handle these conditions (I'm willing to ride short lines). So when largest kite is clear I can simply combine with few meters smaller.

I think you could make it work with the gap between 13, 15 or 17 or even bigger above 11. Just a question of what would be more fun. If you are committed to go for 3 m/s days then 17 or even bigger. But if you wouldn't mind missing a 3 m/s day and just a little more wind is common then 13 would be most fun IMO.

Well, it's not about 3m/s days. It's more about the days where wind drops to 3m/s pretty frequently. But the problem with 19m is that probably it will be way overpowered in 8m/s gusts.

I think 18's and larger really serve 3 purposes in a quiver:
1) Raw power for course racing so that your buddies who are all on 18's or 19's don't beat you downwind.
2) Fat guys who need the grunt because they'd rather buy a bigger kite than stay/get in shape.
3) Groveling at the absolute lowest end of the wind spectrum in totally marginal conditions.

I don't think an 18m/19m is going to take off in less wind than a 15m, I just think they make more power. In most situations you can probably have a session riding a 15m with longer lines in the same conditions as a guy on an 18m, you just won't beat him in a race. The 18m will get overpowered in a gust a LOT sooner than the 15m as well, which in my mind is a drawback. Essentially, 18's and 15's have the same low end but the 18m has a narrower top end.

If you exclude those very rare times when I'm trying to ride in not enough wind or when I'm at a regatta, I almost never wish I had an 18. My quiver is a 9m LEI (Cabrinha Velocity), an 11m Sonic2 and a 15m Joker7. I won't say the 11/15 combo is enough for a 2 kite quiver, but with a small inflatable to cover anything north of 22kts where the 11 maxes out, it's all you'd really ever need. My conditions are very different than yours, so take this advice for what it's worth, I almost never deal with wind shadows or total shut downs due to geography.

If I were advising a foiler on how to build a brand new quiver, I'd say start with an 11 and 15, that'll be your "85%" quiver.

Depending on prevailing conditions at your local spot and your body weight, your 3rd kite could be either an 8m inflatable or an 18/19m foil kite.

Knowing your variables, I think you'll be happiest with your decision if your largest kite is a 15m.

Mine is Sonic 2 11m and Sonic 1 18m. Works great for me and plan on a S5 7m in my future.

Most times u don't need a 15m foil kite. I think a 15m is a borderline low wind kite but not really a low wind kite . I had a 15m lotus and then sold that for an 18m speed 5 because it just wasn't doing it for me in under 11knts . the 18 starts in 8knts all the way up to 15knts then I switch to 12m . My most used kites are 18m and 12m. I also have an 8m but its hardly used . But this all depends offcourse on the winds where u live .
