S1 was lower aspect than the S2, but with an 18m I'm not sure that's noticeable.
It looked like a giant green spaghetti noodle at the end of my lines :o I think if you were racing or trying to, it'd be an excellent kite but for more all-round I think the Speed would be a better choice. That's my guess, as I've only ridden a 5 once :(

So wht low end are people getting on the sonic 2 18m and a big board . i measured 8knts with the 18m speed 5 as the low end. come on somebody must have this kite and used it in winds after all its a low wind kite. And bye the way here is a question for Mr Armin at flysurfer as i know he reads these threads sometimes. Why are there never any flysurfer demos in the usa. I know there is a distributor here but they dont seem to have any interest in promoting the kites out there to real kiters .
On the flat water of the estuary, I was just making upwind ground with a jump or two each tack, on the S2 18 and 140x43 Limited, pretty much keeping me upwind of the regular guys on 17m Contras, Juices etc. I can't put a number on it though . . . wasn't a lot of fun though :D

Have you asked the distributor?

Honestly the usa dealer is a joke. the few intereactions I had with them wont inspiring at all, first time I was looking to buy a kite a few years ago an sent emails didn't receive a response for a few days then called and the dude said oh yeah I been out of the country kiting. I said ok no prob. second time he offered to give me a discount on a kite but later on conveniently forgot and lastly the final straw recently I went to the website to look at some new gear and there were so many errors on the site its embarrassing that this guy is a dealer, there were 11m and 13m sizes listed under the speed 5 series which we all know dosent exist, the radical boards have a price but no sizes listed to choose along with other errors on the website. I just look elsewhere to buy flysurfer stuff now.

I HIGHLY disagree with you on the US dealer. Ted is the main reason why I've stuck with FS. The website may have spelling errors but his customer service is fantastic.

Also they just got done doing demos on the west coast. The US is pretty damn big for only one dealer.

Your answer to your question has too many variables to give a definitive answer (rider weight, water surface, temperature and wind density, laminar or gusty, board size, hydrofoil or displacement , line length.....) FS quote standard wind ranges for a 75kg rider won their website - in the 18m size they say 7-20 on water for the Speed 5 and 6-20 for the Sonic 2.

I am an Australian Flysurfer dealer and weight 85kgs and ride in surf on a hydrofoil so my own experiences are a bit different. My goto light wind kite at the moment is a 11m Boost 2 with 36m lines.

FYI my website is usually pretty up to date with FS material - www.specialistkiteboarding.com.au

Ive been in the kiitng world more than 12 years and have never heard of a demo on the east coast. We have several kite related festivals through out the year including water and snow festivals and have seen all the major manufacturers represented including ozone, north, cabrinha, HQ kites , best kiteboarding and so on never seen flysurfer. may be I'm wrong and someone can correct me. In all fairness the dealer did seem like a nice guy but my dealings made me think he means well but just dosent deliver and the sloppy website dosent do it for me never seen so many errors on a major website.

Thanks for the reply, yes I know flysurfers listed windranges are very accurate I have been getting 8knots as the minimum to stay upwind on a summer day with the 18m speed 5 and a big twintip 144x45 and I weight 186 lbs so so I guess the 6 knot starting on the sonic 2 should be accurate. thanks

I own both the 18m Speed 5 and the 18m Sonic 2.

As far as low end goes, you are not going to gain much switching from the Speed 5 to the Sonic 2. The Sonic 2 is has a smaller leading edge and is thus more aerodynamic, so turning speed is better, but for sheer grunt in light wind, the difference between the two is more too close that you would notice a difference.

If you want to maximize your low end, you should be looking at the 21m Speed 5 or if you want the ultimate light wind kite, the 21m Sonic Race. 😄

Re: Flysurfer speed 18m vs sonic 2 18m

I recently bought a 21m Speed 5 (first foil kite) and am still getting used to it after only 5 riding sessions. I am 90kg and am able to stay upwind on a 135x46 TT in 8 knots without the 6 m extensions. The last time out I found the sweet spot for 8 knots and was fully powered in 10. Once I get proficient I will add the extensions to see how much it increases the low end. Also I have ridden in 14-18 knots but it was a bit scary in the gusts. Reminded me of my early days on a 21.5 m Cabrinha Blacktip C kite. When the wind is 13 knots or more I switch to my LEIs.

Also Ted was very responsive to my inquiry and gave me a fantastic deal. :thumb:
