New foil kite in a hail storm

Postby Macster » Sun Aug 12, 2018 12:04 am

So yesterday my friend convinced me that we should go land boarding and compare the Soul 12m to the Chrono 11m. The weather was sketchy but I was keen for a challenge.

It was the 2nd time my soul has been out of the bag... We'd been landboarding for 15mins and then a feont came through and it started hailing. We landed our kites asap and ironically, the amazing air retention ability of the Soul was an absolute PIA when doing an emergency packdown. My friend had wrapped his bar lines up and his kite and ran 100m over to me and I was still trying to roll the freaken thing.

The hail persisted for 5 mins as I cried and helplessly did a combination of rolling and attempting to lay across the kite and sacrifice my body against the barrage of icy bullets.

Finally the kite was small enough to put in the bag and now at which time of course, the hail stoppped and was replaced by torrential rain.

A mess of kite lines, bridals, grass, mud and squashed canopy was carried back to the car like a fallen soldier, we leave no man behind.

Once home there was no hero's welcome, just a, "ha ha, what do youthink would happen if you went out in this weather" from my loving wife.

Later that evening, I returned to the garage and faced my demons. Puddles of water, like blood in the dimly lit chamber.

I began the tedious process of laying out my baby, one fold at a time and removing the noose of strings, strangling her like a trapped turtle in a fishing net.

I apologised for what I had done and gave her some loving strokes.

Thanks to Flysurfer, the Soul is hailproof, not a scratch but lesson learned!

Epic story, 5 out of 5, would read again.

Glad to hear the kite made it!

Funny!!

Brave man hanging it over the railing like that with a wife around.

If you lay it flat and put a hair dryer on low in one vent you can inflate it to its fully chubby glory and it will dry way faster.

Rename thread " Foil Ventures".

Yesterday I went out at my local on my trusty Hyperlink 9m UL. I was quite overpowered, but wind was coming and going and flucky. Even lei TT guys had kites falling.
Then mine fell 10m from beach while coming in, tacoed, inverted while I saved my foil from the rocks I was standing On. Had to just drag the kite over the seaweed infested stones, lines got stuck on stones and in seaweed. Kite filled with water. Too 30 min to untangle and re rig on the beach.
Wind was back so I figured I would launch and go out to flyit around and dry it.
Later i come in and it's blowing solid 15-17 knots. No one on the beach, 2 guys out in TT.
So I try a teather take down. My foil kite friend said I can teather, put kite a zenith on teather, give bar a light pull to start it towards one side, run out at grab the tip.....

All goes well.... Until I give it light pull and run out there, sprinting like Usain Bolt. It's only 20m... I get within a few meters and tip hits the ground and it bounces up- and really fast heads the other way.... It's going fast across the window at zenith, the bridles making this eery screaming noise, and headed towards the dunes and razor grass.....
Holy S11it. Good thing there's no one about....
Sprint other way and kite dissappears into the dunes..I stop a second to see if it will come back. HR is at 200bpm I think. No life....images of exploded kite...as I run up the dunes and see kite is down in the razor grass....F..F...F..
Drag it out as careful as I can to the beach and do an inspection.. Looks to be in one piece..
I find 2 small pin holes. Whweeew. could have been way worse.
TT guys come in as I'm coming out of dunes....could just waited..

Foil kites are great. But there's some bad aspects...

I’m sorry that is a crazy way to try and self land! If you have a tether / stake what is wrong with flying to the edge of the window right next to the ground, pulling back lines / brake line to get it right on the ground, keeping back lines under tension and then just ambling over and laying it out? I’ve done this in fairly strong winds without an issue, in fact I’d say self launching and landing of a foil is a good bit easier than doing it with an LEI.

Self launching and landing is easier on a foil kite, it is their advantage. No tethered launch or land is not easier, but also not necessary.

Yes, I think you are right, and I won't try it again.

When you do it the way you describe, doesn't the kite slide over down wind when you stall it with rear lines?
