Home made carbon foil how to attach front wing

Postby Scuba » Fri Mar 14, 2014 12:23 pm

Hi again

Got my t bar made 2 halves, but before I stick them together I would just like to ask the question, on which way is the best to attatch the front and rear wing.
I was just thinking of routering a slot for this stainless plate, but then thought about a set of 10 or 12mm barrel nuts with 8mm thread would be a better option, less carbon removed replaceable if stripped etc?.
What to you guys think?

Thanks heaps foilers

Steve :D

I'm going with helicoils on mine, very little volume of carbon removed. :D

I was going to suggest a helicoil too. You can always replace the coil if something goes wrong and you don't have bonding issues with the stainless plate in carbon.

Thanks to Alpine foil for this idea and using as long as possible SS inox M6 inserts like these,
http://www.pemnet.com/fastening-product ... n-inserts/
and this FANTASTIC epoxy,

By off setting inserts much stronger,

I bet barrel nuts would work, for a while. This is a crucial connection Steve. Kind of a hassle to make them, but you can buy Chinook 6mm x 9 and 11mm or 1/4-20 x9and 11mm for 4$ each. Offset is great too, then the bolts are not on the seam of the two halves. There is no right answer. Looking good, keep it up

I used these. Could only find them in 304 which. Too early to tell how long they will last.

How about embedding threaded rods in the fuselage and fastening the wing with countersunk nuts?

Eventually the bolts will split the seam if they are not offset. Those might spin inside too unless you grind them. You could try offset helicoils set in epoxy, but I have not

I used the ones that Plummet posted, and cast them into the hollow carbon fuelage tube with a mix of resin and fiber filler. I just grease the screws with regular axle grease and they glide out after it is cured. I had the wing clamped to the fuselage with clear packing tape on the wing, and screws in place too so they were cast in the right place. You can pack the ends of the holes with play-doh if you want to keep resin from filling up from the bottom of the hole. You can also fill with play-doh if you do more epoxy work over it and then open it up and scoop out the play-doh after. Any bits left will dry out and crumble away.

Place a magnet against the T-nut ; if it sticks then it was made from a BAD alloy, and
will probably deteriorate rapidly.
