tkettlepoint wrote:helis work I have used them for many things over the years... you will have to make a jig so you can drill ( bore) straight in . tinny bit of locktite helps keep them in too just make sure it works with your epoxy

about the inserts can you cut off each side of the backing of the nut so it is more of a "T" shape?
just trying to help out

Terrie, I had thought about cutting off the backing plate but these are stainless so may be hard to do with a zawzall. I may buy a grinding wheel attachment for my drill and grind them off. It's too cold here today to work epoxy so I can finish prepping for next layup and hopefully get the inserts worked out.

that issue solved...a quick trip to Homedepot and I found zinc plated 'barrel' nuts that will fit better. Imbedded in epoxy they should work ok. I could not find them in SS.

I'd try to find something in stainless on the internet. A small mass of Zinc coated steel wont last long around a large mass of carbon.

A R,
Do yourself a big favor and find Inox, stainless steel inserts!
Don`t use your zink plated they will not last and you risk breakage and part loss!
And when you imbed them use an epoxy micro ballon mixture to avoid interaction between the S S and carbon.
Better to slow down your build now in winter and get the correct parts so next spring you can fly with confidence.

Take your time and find the best size for your specific needs if not from here then I am sure you can find the good part there in the USA.

I've used the square ones from this company. They are used by F1 racing teams for carbon fibre body panels, for wind tunnel testing etc

These babies won't twist or pull out. Great quality as well.

Edge19, are you using the brass inserts? Visited 2 more stores this morning...I bought an 8/32 bolt and 3 nuts, stainless. I'm thinking stacking the nuts , taping off the end and then dropping into the hole full of epoxy. if the screw backs out after the epoxy sets up, then this will work and i'll be able to run 4 screws alternating off set of center line. Is 8mm too small considering 4 will be used on the front and 2 on the back?
