Built a new board and tried to save a few $ by buying some bargain carbon, this stuff has Kevlar tracers to help visually aline the carbon which caused an unexpected problem, the kevlar creates a raised line which I supposed is caused by different absorption characteristics than the carbon, kevlar does not sand, it just becomes fuzzy so everywhere there is a kevlar thread there is effectively a dam and the gloss coat wont flow correctly , I have had to apply 3 gloss coats to get rid of the lines which of course increased the weight of the board, not to mention a ton of extra work. this stuff would be fine for internal lams but not for the surface.
So, take this as a warning, kevlar tracers are a no-no for a finish lamination.

insider trading about the Kevlar... Crazy Glue is your best friend. when it get fuzzy put alittle crazy glue on it and razor it off. you might go through a dozen tubes but it works.
This is my light wind board with carbon/Kevlar bottom... Matt hated it when I made him glass it for me
went through a box of crazy glue on the rails
don't know why the picture looks like there is a concave between the back fins because there isn't

Do you gloss coat your hydro strut and wings? I was wondering if I could get away without doing it.

In my opinion a gloss finish isn't necessary but a super smooth finish is important, like wet sanded to at least 400 grit.

Shop? what shop? I work in some extra space in the house( and have to clean up after) but you are welcome to stop by for a coffee or beer anytime.

Hi, are you sure that the tracer is kevlar ? From the picture I would say it is Dynema. Kevlar is worse to sand then Dynema. You can mill Dynema - but not Kevlar.
By the way, Kevlar is not UV stable, the sun eats up the Kevlar. Sorry english is not my native language.
By the way, it is no good idea to expose carbon to the sun unpainted. My carbon stuff is either grey or white.
tks
