DIY Board advice please - connection point

Postby kjorn » Thu Jun 30, 2016 11:09 pm

Hi,

My current board is too short and nose dives each time I dolphin. Current board is 115cm with foil attached about 10cm from tail. DIY board and foil. I've done about 20 second runs.

So I have purchased a twin tip that is exactly the same planing area as the Moses board (it is a slightly different shape) What I am thinking is that I'd like to cut a hole in the bottom for the base plate of the foil to fit into. I'm thinking that this will make the bottom of the board cleaner and less draggy.

How deep can I make the hole -- base plate is 15mm deep board is about 15-20mm deep? How thin a board can I go? The board is foam core.

Has anyone any experience with this sort of thing?

Cheers!

You making the board a lot weaker where it should be made even stronger, but if you do your layup right then I don't think it will be a problem

Worth doing it ? No I dont think so, the gain will be minimal IMO

You are headed the wrong way, waste of your time. But if you insist, you should ADD material to bottom to create recess. You can use cell Core or Divinycell 80 kg/m3. Glue it down, route out recess and fair it nice. Cover with several layers glass wrapping edges. Gonna have to consider boards material to get everything to adhere. To do it nice you'll need some skill and experience.

I wouldn't worry about drag from the base plate. As soon as you are up on a foil it won't matter, I guess the base plate would technically increase drag a bit, but I doubt you'd notice it, especially when starting out. I'd try just drilling 4 holes first, and if it isn't working for you, then start getting fancy.

Wood core board woulda been better. Just drill oversized. Fill with epoxy, then drill propped size for the bolts. Use a big washer n the deck. Make sure it floats your foil before heading out. Drag form the plate is the last of your worries. It will sit really low in he water and be hard to find after a good crash, especially if you crash your kite and take your eyes off your board for a minute. Mine had a black deck pad, now it's neon green! Even so, I try to never lose track of it.

Thanks for the advice :D I'll just reinforce the board then drill holes and epoxy. No recess :thumb:
