Flange Rivet nut SS inserts for mast

Postby downunder » Tue Oct 18, 2016 3:30 am

Heya

what are you using for a fuselage - mast - plate connection? I'm thinking a flange Rivet as this one:

"These are the open end large-flange 316 A4 marine grade stainless steel rivet nuts and they are ribbed on the flange for better grip against rotation with the following dimensions:"

Part No D dk K L L1 d Hole Grip Thread Pitch
FKM6-15 M6 13 1.3 15 7 8.9 9 0.5-2.5 1

I am light (<60kg), I don't think I need M8.

What do you think?

Thx
D.

6mm is big enough. 316 SS is good but that flange looks small .Personally, I lost a foil, so I started through bolting the plate to board with a similar t-nut 18/8 on the deck with a sleeve or hard point,, in the board. Fuselage /wing is more demanding. In my opinion.

Thanks for the reply, will try to find a bigger flange.

I do have heaps of TT inserts with 19/9 and used it for wings. But, 19mm flange is way to big to stick in a mast. Might cut it tho.

Are we not better off with barrel nuts (cross dowels) for connections to the mast?

Ok DU, I misunderstood what you meant by mast/fuse/plate.
Those might work fine inside the mast, they could spin in place though. Here is a picture of what I have used. The round ones in the board the double sandwiched parallel sided ones inside my fuselage. The 316 nuts I will grind down narrow

125mm mortised strut , exposed barrel nuts, with some different fasteners
and embed them in my newest mast. There is not much room with a 12 or 13 millimeter strut though.

Faklord , yes, spotz tuna uses barrel nuts concealed in their mortise/tenon connection, very clever! I tried it like the the picture, it didn't seem bomber enough and I couldn't figure out the mold layup process with such a deep mortise in the fuse

For my last foil i bonded everything togehter in one piece except the tail wing, the result is a super stiff low maintenance foil setup without having to deal with fiddly nuts and bolts. Air travel is cancelled though

and now that I have the tail wing angle set i may take out the grinder and permanently attach the stab while adding some hydro tweaks to the fuse. i had tried to make a detachable fuse to strut connection but it is really hard to get a good result when working with a 13mm strut, not much meat there to sink nuts and bolts into.

For a bigger flange put SS washers on the river nuts and fix it to the rivet nut

If one needs not break down for transport no doubt this way is excellent as alows for Stab A o A adjustment while being strong all bonded together. :thumb:
My old go to high gusty wing foil even has stab bonded as after years I know the adjust I like.

By the way barrel nuts are best and may I suggest 2 at least both Fuse to STRUT and STRUT to board for D I Y applications for added security.
