Broken Foil - Need advice

Postby Mossy 757 » Sat Nov 12, 2016 5:25 pm

*CRACK!*

And that was all she wrote for my Sword2...not sure what I hit, I suspect it was a sea turtle, which makes me feel even worse about this. I'm considering my options to repair/replace and would like some expert input about the viability of repairs.

-Does this look fixable?
-How fixable does it look? Easily repaired back to as-new condition or would this be a frankenstein job to make everything hold together?

Thanks!

Does it squeeze back together?

If so,
Clean out the crack the best you can. pour some acetone or isopropanol in the gap to flush out can clean up.
Fill the threads in the insert with something soft like plasticine, play doh or similar.
Heat some epoxy so it is thin and runny. Pour it into the crack where you cant reach with a brush,
Brush on the epoxy in the section the brush will fit.
Clamp it together with clamps or a vice.
Use plastic bag on the clamps to stop them sticking to the work.

The will stick it back together. After its stuck back together i'd layup some 200gm carbon on the top and the nose leaving the wing shaped connection point original.
That should stop the fuse splitting apart In the future.

PS Sand off the paint anywhere you want to lay carbon down.

pss. The rear threaded insert is showing signs of crevice corrosion. I'd also clean that up, be retapping it with with an end tap.

Sorry plummet ; that ain't gonna work on this repair.

Your looking at a de-bonding at the mold 1/2's juncture ; and a repair MUST include
sanding with min 50grit where it needs gluing, or it will just split again.

Now you can do what plummet said ; then pull 1 tow of carbon or spectra, and
wrap it full length around the fuse, to hold it together permanently.

:-( No, it's really hard to even get it to budge a bit. Not sure what's in there, shining a flashlight down in there it looks like it didn't break clean in 2, it kinda "tore" whatever is in the middle apart. If you look at the top picture, on "this" side of the screw holes, you can see that the surface where the wing mounts is also torn and fractured a bit.

@Bille, so are you saying I need to pull the whole thing apart in order to rebond properly?

Gosh,

a Sword foil? I am intrigued by this fuselage construction. It looks like wood, can you confirm pls? If it is, that changes a fix slightly.

Shitty.....everything is fixable....time skill and patience I've taken masts busted clean in half and put them back together.
plummets suggestion is pretty much what I'd do.
making it pretty afterward takes time but doesn't have to be a frankestein job if you've got the patience.
If you don't have epoxy in your garage, you may not want to try this one as your first project... send it to someone who knows what they're doing.

NO

Do what plummet said , (to tack it back together) ; then wrap it full length with one tow
of spectra or carbon, and add the epoxy after the wrap-job. Just lightly sand the fuse
before Ya wrap it ; the fibers won't wanna separate from the fuse because there going
around the entire body in one continues line.
Now if you wrap it with a woven fabric ; Ya need to sand the hell out of it with 50-grit
to get a good mechanical bond.

The wrap-job with one tow, should only add about .004" ; if you use 3K carbon.
And keep them flat as possible when wrapping it.
