Hot wiring wanna bee

Postby tahoedirk » Sun Nov 27, 2016 4:20 am

Thanks to Billie I realized I really am a hot wiring wanna bee.
I got a massive block of foam at a plastering supply company in Reno. They had a very cool hot wire setup that really left me feeling inadequate, I know I'm a good person and great father and all that, but even their foam rasp made feel like a rookie. I really feel like I could be a good foam cutter too!

I fried my 24v doorbell transformer with dimmer cutting blanks the other day. Next I used a 12v led dimmer with a 7$power supply I had to replace it. Man I broke a bunch of wires figuring out how slow to cut with the new one.
Cutting formica templates ,however, was a breeze, with reading glasses.. These ones are a bit too skinny and fragile though. Sharp scissors got pretty darn close , followed by sanding to 400 and a pencil lead lube.

Ever since I started building hydrofoilses I've been working with airfoil templates that I already had on hand, actually selected for RC discus launch gliders. Before making a mold, I would build up layers until i achieved the dimensions I was after. I am sure this distorted the profiles significantly, good or bad.

I decided to try some profiles selected specifically for my new needs, hydrofoils., and also fabricate them as accurately as possible . I have always been looking for a quick and dirty way to make molds , Billie supported this notion. The foam wing beds may well help , After some hours of tinkering, I see a couple simple building techniques trying to reveal themselves.
Have a look kooks.

It took a bunch of tries, but I did get some very accurate ones!

OK you guys try

A bit of practice is all.it takes!

Ths is after cleaning up the shop for two hours. I cut some templates for the wing shape too!

Rear stab. 65 and 40mm templates are definitely on the small side.

NICE Work !!! :thumb:

1/2" MDF board from Home depot ; works better than that particle board Ya used.
It's Way more expensive ; but worth it. Also, a light layer of epoxy to the MDF, and
let cure , and light sanding with 220g ; will make for a better contact-cement job of
your cradle to the table. Only use the MDF for the top ; the rest of the table can
be made from the cheap stuff.

Hi, thanks guys,
This aspect ratio is KOS in the beds and MTS in the positive wing after glassing which adds length to the chord, if I do go with the positive.

Maybe I can make a vid but I'm pretty messy. For these cuts I abandoned my pulley system and just used a long bow with a pivot screw.

Thanks Billie, I actually already got most of the curve in the beds already with 2 layers of 6oz on the back. They did not want to bend without a bunch of kerfing top and bottom. I cut the contour bed for the beds out of foam. I was thinking of glassing the wing and beds together , alternately ?, and then finally adding a layer of gel to the beds for a smooth shiny finish . We'll see though, I want to figure an easy, quick way and cut out as much work as possible. Does lake Mohave blow this time of year? is it deep enough to foil? We got a foot of snow last night

Oh yeah that's kindofskinny and mediumtoslim

1/4" MDF with glass on both sides , might be a better choice for a tight radius bend.
Hope you figure out that quicker way !!! :thumb:

Hi!
The best hot wire foam cutting is explained here:

My own attempt is to cut Clark Y airfoil is on the picture.
