Poor man's CNC

Postby DartBoard » Tue Dec 20, 2016 11:47 am

Just came across this tool for copying 3D objects with a router.

http://www.easycarver.com/

Turns out there are hundreds of DIY variations

Things that come to mind for it are carving a mast using just a section of the foil and locking the travel on the short axis, copying an existing wing or making a foam model of a wing and then copying that to wood.

Anyone ever used one?

no unfortunately i do not and i stopped doing it and put it on the back burner, winds been too good the past couple of weeks

next no wind day i will try it and take pics, I've only done it on pine wood, haven't bought an actual g10 sheet yet, let alone an aluminum bit and bar of aluminum for a fuselage

i don't have fiberglass skills..., but someone could take my copy and fiberglass it and make a light fuselage wing combo

i don't see the benefit of copying a mast thou

What I was thinking about for the mast was not to copy the full thing but instead to make a small section of the profile (say out of 3/8" ply so its like a rib that you'd use in making an airplane wing), mount it on some sort of slider that you could push up and back parallel to the wooden blank to be carved. If this worked then you'd get exactly the same foil section carved along the full length of the blank - more an idea for getting a consistent and hopeful nice and symmetrical foil section on the mast.

Some pics, i don't think you could ever get an exact replica to the mm with a copy carver, but you can come really close if u have an original

beauty of foils is that it doesnt matter, its still gonna fly,...the original might be a slight bit more efficient...

i am ready for g10...i was also thinking of glassing pine wood

Looks awesome! Go for the G10. Although it can be a little unruly with routers...make sure all them bolts are tight!
