Nobile skimboard - best way to stiffen it for foil use?

Postby omg » Sat Feb 11, 2017 1:31 pm

I have been riding Nobile kite skimboard with foil and I have laminated with epoxyresin a wide strip (20cm/8inch) of carbon (180g/6oz or so) on top of the board from tail to nose. The board is still a bit too flexy for my taste, so what's the best way to stiffen it?

Should I just laminate a carbon strip to the bottom of board as well? The problem is perhaps the thinness of the board, abt 15-20mm. The thicker the board would be the more effective the carbon strips would be. How would you do this stiffening?

Thanks and good winds!

You don't mention what type of carbon you used ? Uni - biax - etc

But yes adding a layer to the other side will stiffen it up

Thanks, I believe it's called twill, so the carbon stripes are 90 degrees to each other, sort of criss cross.

oh, and is there a big difference in stiffness between the unidirectional and twill (same grams/sqm)?

Yea there is a huge difference

Half the fibers you have placed on the board are wasted if you have it in a 0-90 orientation

I run a section of 300gsm uni down either side of my foil boards to stiffen them up then place the wrapping material at 45-45

You should get some Uni directional carbon and laminate it on both sides of the board.
Lamination on one side it's fairly useless.
If you want it stiff, just put 3x300 g 100mm wide each side.

twill is 50% useless for stiffening, only the fibres going at 0 will help. fubres at 0 usesless.

Get some uni directional. slap it on the bottom.

Question. will this be a dedicated foil board from now on? or do you want to use it as a skim?
If its dedicated. Go for super stiff. Don't f*** around 400grm uni top and bottom.
You don't need to full length. From maybe 200mm back from the foil mount or 100back from the rear foot (if that's further back that the foil. To 100mm past the front foot.

Thanks, for foil only. I learned with that board, surpisingly easy board for foiling.
