Old School Hand-Crafted Mast

Postby Bluecrewmark » Wed Mar 01, 2017 1:30 am

Any suggestions on how to proceed on my Mast/Tuddle build up?
Wrap the mast with carbon first?, or build up the mortise/tenon end , then wrap the mast with lots of carbon?

I would glue and set the nuts perfectly first. Then if possible lay up the mast in one hit. It might not be possible to do a single layup however.

Also consider using 2 nuts each side, That will give you redundancy us you get gauling. Also consider small slots or grinding rough edges into the nuts so the carbon/resin has a spot to check into and hold tight.

I tried doing the nuts like that and they didn't line up perfectly when set so getting a bolt to thread was impossible and I spun the nuts tryin. Just sayin they better be perfect especially using two nuts inline. Next time I need to make a connection like that I plan on using a brass barrel nut. That way you can make the part solid, drill bolt hole and nut hole after curing and press the nut in. I think it is stronger also.

Nope, this would not be a go. The mast might break exactly there. If you look at the race fins tuttle, the nut is not on the fin, so the forces are different. In your case the nut would be sort of on a big 'fin' which is a mast. The forces there are extreme, hence we need continuous carbon threads.

Bluecrewmark, I am in the same situation. When you wrap the mast in one hit, your carbon might stick to the surface when you flip the mast to do the other side. This might lift the whole carbon on the bottom when you handle the mast to vacuum it.

I would strongly suggest to make some sort of jig so you can warp the mast but not touching anything with carbon. I would wrap the mast positioning a cloth from LE, so mast vertically placed above the desk, with some distance from the TE for carbon excess.

That way, the cloth will nicely overlap. Than you put a peel ply, bleader and bleeder and everything in a vac.

My tuttle jig:

Good luck

Simple jig, highly recommended when laminating.

Thanks for the feedback fellow builders. As I slowly progress with this project, I have managed to create more problems. While laying up the mast to the base plate, I managed to get the base plate out of level. It became especially aggravating when I couldn't draw a good vacuum and therefore creating air voids in the carbon! I believe this was caused by getting epoxy on the sealant tape.
2 Questions:
1) How do I level the bottom of the base plate?
2) How do you keep the sealant tape from becoming contaminated?

What about this type of connection?

Sorry but I'm not sure what's going on there. The finished end looks good just copy for other end maybe.
