Paulownia carbon Paipo

Postby GregFoil » Mon Jun 26, 2017 5:28 pm

Hi all, first post here, great reading lately...

I want to build a light paipo, something like Greg's BRM in a shorter version. I want the board to be thin and light for travelling. I already have a strapped volume board, a Slingshot Dwarfcraft 54'.
I 've been exchanging some posts on the French forum, but may be I can also get some help here. I do have experience with paulownia and HWS surf, and I want to keep the wood look.
I have the two paulownia skins ready, as my first idea was to only put ine carbon layer in the middle, but I was advised to make a proper sandwich with a core, and then another skin and FV, for minimal flex and good compression resistance. Insted of any kind of foam, I wanted to test paulownia as a core, as it is used on skis construction and regular kiteboards.

I did two tests, one with carbon, and another with regular glass>
3oz/90g FG
1mm wood (look)
7oz/200gr carbone or FG
paulownia 5mm
7oz/200gr carbon or FG
paulownia 5mm
3oz/90g FG

Escalating the weight, in case I can match everything, should be around 2.5/2.8kg, which sounds good. I will later add some pics of the tests, + a couple of my hws boards.
Any comments or previous experience would be great.
Thanks!
Greg

Thanks! There is big school of HWS builders, you can find really amazing boards here, if you are interested> http://www.grainsurf.com/forum/

The tests for the Paipo are only the ones on top, the thin ones...
Anyone knows about the construction of the BRM boards? They look way stronger than a regular kiteboard.

Here there are a couple pics of the complete surfboards, the left one is a replica of the original Steve Lis 5'5" Fish, and the other one is 6'4">

Great stuff mate, love your work!

One question tho, this looks like the wood grain parallel to the board surface? Would it be better to have it square or even parallel with the fin leading edge (LE)?

Cheers

If you go with these unconventional layers, consider flipping it so the veneer over carbon side is the bottom and the glass over wood side is top deck. Reason: bolts will compress the wood/glass onto the carbon between the 5mm layers, the carbon willl remain supported in plane by the wood layers and not be point loaded by the fasteners leading to possible early failure. On the bottom in the other hand you have that big foil plate to distribute loads so less need of any buffer for your carbon. All that said probably will work either way....

Thanks for the comments

You are right, that was probably a mistake, but I guess the fiberglass on the fins is strong enough for any setup. I have similar patterns on 3 boards, and so far they are OK.

Yep, sounds like a good idea, will do. In any case, I will reinforce the plate area with a few extra carbon layers.
The veneer was one I had at hand, I have to search a little more for strenght vs weight on veneers, there are many options there.

I talked yesterday with Greg Drexler, from BRM, and he was kind and very supportive. Their boards are roughy based on the snowboard process, changing laminates, cores, etc to suit the use. But the veneer wood on his boards is part of the structure, quoting him "an integral portion of the construction + performance."
You can imagine the R&D for those boards is far more complex than my trial an error...
