Hydrofoil board building - dimensions & Layups

Postby TomW » Sat Dec 16, 2017 4:31 pm

I'm getting ready to shape some blanks.
I had to reshape the boards in Akushaper to make them machinable, and the machiners managed to make them, I'll get them soon. Didn't have to use the Divinycell.

My plan is to make a 1350mm board for intermediate riding and rough conditions, and a Pocket board for flat conditions and when I process this coming summer.

I've decided to make them a bit thicker, about 30-40mm to compensate for the fact I'm using standard surfboard blank with 25kg/m3 density.

I'm pretty confident on the size and rocker of the 1350, it's based on my 1450 I have now that I'm happy with, but it's too heavy. it will be 1350 x 470mm with moderate beveled rails on the bottom.

The pocket board is more of question. I was thinking 1200, but see that Ketos and others make them smaller.
I'm 5-8 (175cm), 78-80 kg.
You guys that ride pocket boards, what is your recommendation for length and width?

Also, I have 250mm from plate back edge, and there's plenty or space for my rear foothook and foot. I could mount foil another 70-100 mm back, and shift foothook all the way to the tail. I see some people have the foil almost all the way to the tail. Any negatives with this?
Should I forget the bevels on the bottom rails?

For layup I'm thinking from top down :
4oz glass
6 oz glass
6 oz deck patch
3x 250g uniD cf - 100+150+250 wide to taper edge. Full length
Foam with HD foam insert at plate mount and foothook mounts.
3x 250g uniD cf - 100+150+250 wide to taper edge. Full length
6oz glass
4oz

Strong enough?

If you are making the pocket board to sell i'd suggest foil mounting options that allow foot on and behind the mast. I think foil design and riding style dictate this. I'm a foot on mast kinda guy.

Chines are good. They make high speed tough downs nicer when leaning over cranklng upwind. When I made my pocket board I though it would be more efficient to have a flat bottom and kick the nose rocker steep towards the front.
I was wrong. Aggressive nose rocker makes the board plow through the water and is less efficient. Roll with a more constistant rocker nose to tail. The width of my pocket board is 40cm at the tail, 44cm at the widest by the front foot. 120cm long

118cm x40 2lbs core with 2 layers of 6oz carbon and one layer of 6 oz glass top and bottom.

118 is too small for most people... 120 is ok but 125 is better
just my 2 cents

Thanks Terrie,

Your board looks like what I'm planning, but I'll have more rocker into tail creating more continuous rocker like Ketos boards and plummet suggest.

40 is really narrow. 47 is what I'm used to. Have think about that.

I have 3 blanks so maybe a 1350 and 1250 first and save the last blank.

My layup sounds sufficient compared to yours.

Why do you need wider than 44?.
It's a pocket board. So who cares if it's a little more power hungry on a water start.

Ps I'm going in 6 knots on my 12 Chrono with my pocket board.

I don't know why, but Ketos boards are 118x 46cm and 130 x 48

I had a go on a spitfire mounted on a shinnister yesterday. Interestingly it took more power/speed to get on the foil than my pocket board/foil combo. I'm thinking that the type of foil will matter to a pocket board. I literally water start straight into foiling with my set up . I think my foil is good at water starting and requires less board size as a consequence.

So.... more width would be good for a later starting foil. However more width also means more rail touchdowns when cranked and powered.

Making it for yourself I'd explore the smaller limits of what's possible. Making it for others. Kettles 125 x Ketos 48cm might be the go for the masses looking for a pocket set up.

Plummet, these 3 blanks are for me to experiment. Not for resale.
First I want to make a mainstream 1350 board with decent rocker and light weight. I have a Slingshot Dwarfcraft 1350 that has 60mm nose rocker and 2mm negative tail rocker. It sucks with my moses foil because it can't even go on surface without nosing down. I like the length and width, and volume of it, but the rocker is a bad design.
My plan is this board will be good in rough conditions and now when I'm still intermediate.
Second, I want to have a pocket board for lighter conditions, and probably be set up with a bigger slower wing like the moses 590.

1: 1350*470
2: 1200*470
3: 1200*440

Is yours 440 at the widest point. And wide point at front foot?

Maybe depends on style too, if you want smallest kite workable, extra width of 45+cm will help get going to lift-off speed and help waterstart in lowest wind, and might help you bounce off the surface instead of bogging down (so will chines, if the board is big enough).
But if you are the dogmatic purist, you can use a super-micro board, or even cut a hole in the middle like Drexler did, and maybe save 300 grams.
