DIY Thick surf foil wings

Postby Jyoder » Mon Jul 30, 2018 2:56 am

Trend seems to be toward larger foil wings for freeride and waves aka surf foils. Anyone try to build one DIY? Seems to me that the thickness of the profile and slower foiling speed would lessen the challenges of imperfect homemade wings by allowing less expensive materials to be used. Thoughts?

I’d love to be able to try a surf foil for light wind kiting but they’re still too new and expensive.

I am planning to 3D print one and laminate with fiberglass/carbon fiber. I have designed one inspired by Moses Onda 633. I went with H105 wing profile. I am not sure if I should add a bit of washout to wingtips. Also, since this is a thick wing I wonder if I may/should design this so it slides over a 20x20mm square aluminum fuselage.
Check it out on Sketchfab:

I can post CAD files to thingiverse if anyone is interested.

Nice work. Please do post step files to thingverse.

How did you arrive at extruding the profile...and what NACA profile did you use if any?

I uploaded it to thingiverse (including the Fusion 360 file and step).
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3026918

I designed it using Fusion 360 and used the H105 profile. More on the profile here:
http://www.tspeer.com/Hydrofoils/h105/h105.htm

Fusion 360 has plugins to plot any airfoil, and using the tutorial below, it's only a matter of a few minutes to design a wing with any profile, outline and anhedral.

Thanks. I am actually working on building a foil might use foil design. Just printed out my mast pieces have not glued them together yet. No time but I have all winter to fiddle with it.

Hi,

tks for the fusion file. I will def. pull molds based on your design, but I think I will use thinner profiles. Having slightly washout is a good idea.

great job. did you already design a rear wing? if yes, can you also upload the file to thingiverse? thanks

Sure, did design some wings. First this one:
wing1.png
I wanted to be able to print it a once. So it was sized to fit in the build volume of the printer. It was printed vertically in PETG material. Vertical printing orientation makes it weak, but I tried it on the water, and did not break.

Then I designed and printed this one:
wing2.png
It's printed leading edge down on the build plate. With this shape, even with a small printer it is possible to print a large back wing at once. And because of this orientation, it's much stronger. This one I did not try yet. I am concerned about the flex of the top part.

Then I designed this one:
wing3.png
I have not printed this yet. But its fixed to the fuselage both on the top and bottom surfaces. So it should be both stiff and strong. Also the sides of the wing double as vertical stabilizers.

Thingiverse link to the back wings: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3080738

Next, I am planning a version which I can change AOA on the water, without swapping shims.

BTW, I have updated the front wing on Thingiverse, with:
-Shim to mount on an aluminum 2x2cm fuselage
-Split to 3 or 5 pieces for easier printing with alignment holes
-A version called "Hammerhead". Same wing surface with a flat leading edge. The aim is easier lamination. Just fold epoxy impregnated fiberglass over the wing. Put it in a storage vacuum bag till the epoxy hardens.
Added Fusion 360 files only

thanks. great ideas for back wings!!!!! when you said you tried the first design, did you try it without laminating the rear wing at all?
