IKEA Wings

Postby direnc » Mon Jul 30, 2018 3:06 pm

Hi Guys,

I was curious if I could make some wings out of some stuff you can find at IKEA. I built a front wing from a bamboo chopping board, which turned out fine. I glassed it, but I am sure it's strong enough to fly without any glass.

I also built a front wing and a few back wings from a plastic IKEA chair. I was not sure if it would fly, but it does fly. I bit sketchy when going faster and a bit roll unstable, but flies despite the dihedral and curvy tips. I only made a 3d printed part to set the angle of incidence of the wing to zero degrees, and sharpened the trailing edge.

Below are the photos:

I left the foil at a kiteschool, and had my friend there shoot a small video with it. I got the files via whatsapp, so the resolution is low. Here it is:

Class!
Can we have a peak at your board as well? Looks like that might be equally interesting?

How important is it to get the dimensions/shape exactly right?
Can you just make some shape out of wood that looks like a foil wing and get away with it?
Or is it really important to get the shape exactly right?

Not really important for a recreational foil IMO. Anything that resembles a wing and has a somewhat hydrodynamic profile will fly.
I once shaped a wing out of 18mm thick construction plywood, only applied epoxy to seal the wood. Not only it flew, it was strong enough for my body weight of 80kg. I liked the wing and later gave it a coat of fiberglass though... Here is a pic of that wing, without glass:

The board, from top to bottom has this composition:
  • 200g glass
    4mm plysood
18mm XPS insulation foam with 18mm paulownia plank in the middle area
    4mm plywood bottom rail
    400g glass
It's about 145 x 50 cm, with lots of nose rocker. Thanks to the embedded plank of wood, it's super stiff.
Here are some pictures:
