How To: Kite Launch and Landing

How to set up your kite and launch

Video

Beach Kite Launch Procedure

How To

1. Place board so you can easily get it on your way to the water.
2. Pick up your own kite Watching out that the sand you put on it doesn't blow into someone's eyes. Better to gently grasp the canopy and let the sand fall off the front rather than flipping the kite with all the sand still on it.
3. Clean off the sand if applicable (ever heard of de-icing?)
4. Straighten your bridals if you have any.
5. Signal for some help. But not someone who is in the middle of attaching their lines.
6. Give Launcher your clean kite and exchange greeting.
7. Quickly move to your bar.
8. Quickly move to correct position so Launcher doesn't need to move - if space allows.
9. Tension lines and check for proper attachment and absence of tangles. Check that bar is parallel to kite tips. Launcher please be vigilant as well.
10. Signal for launch: arm/thumb up
11. Launcher make sure the is canopy is tight, and it is not flapping.
12. Launcher wait until airspace is clear and release
13. Steer the kite up slowly
14. Rider thank Launcher. Launcher wish rider a fun session.

Tips

- Make sure to get help from someone who knows how to launch a kite. Do ask before!

Launching C Kite Unhooked

Description

Launch your kite on the beach, not being hooked into the chicken loop. Feels much safer for launching/landing when it's more dangerous.

How To

1. Setup as normal self launch (sand on wing tip) or with assistant.
2. Grab top side of bar with one hand.
3. Grab chicken loop with the other hand.
4. Agree a 'ready' signal with assistant (both hands are busy) and launch.
5. This technique allows you to sheet & control the kite unhooked and if it all goes off - let go, it would more than likely get ripped from your hands.

Tips

- Set plenty of depower so its not too much of a handful.

Launching a Kite in the Deep Water

Description

Launching a kite from the water, without any beach around, just jumping off a boat.

How To

Put your kite in the water facing the wind so it does not have any pull, then release it. Wait until your kite drifts away and until your lines are straight. The kite will normally turn itself automatically into the wind. Then, just do the normal relaunching procedure, by pulling either the right or left line (not the bar) and the kite will glide until it is at the edge of the wind window, then pull the same line again, and the kite will be in the air.

Self Launching

Description

How to self launch your kite.

Tips

- Some kiters use this to show off and endanger others, even when others could assist.
- I use it when alone in lower winds and NO ONE downwind on a sandy sideshore beach.
- It can go very very wrong, even for the most advanced kiters. Maybe only once in 50.
- It is always a danger to anyone downwind.
- Hard landings may get a shell hole in your leading edge.
- Launches with line errors or bridle snags will loop the kite.

Self Landing

Description

How to self land your kite.

How To

Attaching Weight

An even safer way to self land is to attach your chicken loop to a solid object (life guard chair, fence, tree, etc) or if there is nothing you can use a sand screw or sand bag.

1. plan where you will land before you go out
2. when you come in depower the kite and bring the kite down to the edge of the window
3. remove the chicken loop from your harness and hook it on to a carabiner attached to the sand screw or object.
4. go quickly to your kite and set it down properly with the middle of the LE facing into the wind.
