Last week, cold air, Pacific moisture and high winds converged atop the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming. The result was enough snow for the first sessions of the winter. While the snowtel was reporting 19”, as you can see from the photos, it was generally half that depth. However what was lacking in inches was made up for by wind speed and temperatures. Our first day was 14 degrees F and blowing 30+! Eight meter kiting, YES! While the flats were thin, Baldy’s gullies were fat with wind driftage such that I could easily find knee deep blower all day. I felt like a kid again, ripping cold smoke until sunset.
Our second day brought out a few locals from Sheridan and slightly warmer temps. Instead of the 8m wind from the day before, it was solid 10m conditions. I spent most of my time on Baldy’s N side. With temps in the 20’s it was not as light as the day before but it was still pow and we were fully lit.
Sunday, the Fantastic Four from JH arrived and so did super warm temps and super light west winds. We had a fun time on a small hill north of 14A and Pascal and I even visited Baldy’s W side. While we bailed Sunday, the JH crew stuck around for another day of heat and SW wind.
So, while it’s not winter quite yet, there are snow sessions waiting to be harvested in the high mountains of the Rockies.
Thanks for reading and See Ya Out There,
Noah

Nice Noah! Even got a picture of me on one of my first forward glides! I ate it in the dirt on Baldy the next day doing that. I think I'm really a snowboarder. Here's a couple more pics...

I was wonderin' if you all got out last week. Looks like South Dakota would have been a good bet as well. Love the pics! JR
