Skyline utah forecast jan 9-14

Postby mountainkiter » Sun Jan 08, 2017 10:31 pm

I will be traveling through Skyline area this week. Looks like they have been getting good snow. My question is about the forecast. I have looked at windguru and at NOAA and the wind looks crazy strong like between 30-50mph on Monday Tuesday, slight less wed, and very little or 11mph on Thursday. Wondering how accurate the forecasts are for that area. 30-50 at 20 degress sounds both cold, miserable and dangerous. then 11 seems light. Anyway I have kites 6-8-12-18m so can cover a windrange. Anyone from around there who could check out the forecast and predict the good days would be appreciated. Right now Im looking at trying Wednesday and Thursday this week. Thanks.

Sorry, I can't give a good comment about Utah winds. Probably just gotta go and try it. I rarely fly anything smaller than a 9m here as it's usually horrible whiteout by then.
We had a great day Sunday on RMP with good 12m SW winds, flat light, and just enough soft snow in pockets to find safe places to land jumps. More storms all week yahoo! Kiting at 12k after a month in the flatlands kicked my butt!

Matt, do you know if and where you might be kiting this weekend??> I'm in Flagstaff, looking either skyline or lizard head pass. Its just hard to predict mountain wind conditions, they change every day on the forecast.

Hey mountainkiter,
I have work in Telluride on Thursday and might try to get in a SW wind session on LH. The forecast looks lackluster forh LH this weekend, but as you say, it will change. I'll try to remember to give you a shout if I see any thing more promising. Maybe a better chance at higher elevation above treeline if you're dialed into backcountry. CAIC is a good forecast resource.

Welcome to my world Matt. I have to admit I love the abuse when I hook up with you Rocky Mt Kiters. I am in Utah headin' for Gunnison to hook up with Scott. Gonna check out the OR show tomorrow and Strawberry on Thursday on my way. Hope to get into Snowmesa this weekend. I see some sun and wind in the forecast. I am in my personal rig with my machine. Would love to get up there with ya. JR

JR! It would be great to see you on this lap. I am committed to helping out at the varsity climbing comp on Saturday but keep me posted for what Sunday might bring. George and I got signed up for the Ragnarok race in April so blasting across Snow Mesa could be some good training-

Matt,

I find it a little odd that you posted a question regarding Utah weather on a CO riding thread. I just saw your post and I hope you are getting in some riding. The Utah mountains were bombarded this week.

To answer your question, we rarely see winds above 30 mph. When we do, it is typically a blizzard.

The coverage this year is the best I have ever seen it at Strawberry with no sage poking up anywhere. If you never experienced a downwinder at Strawberry, this is the year to do it with a vast amount of terrain open to explore. Don't get me wrong Skyline is terrific, but Strawberry is truly vast with 100 times the amount of riding terrain. :thumb:
