Would anyone care to explain the really good NW wind that blows down out of the canyons like a leaf blower at Strawberry? I am guessing but is that katabatic wind? Not good for gliding as it blows downhill but so solid. Does that happen very often?

Windrupted,
Yes, you are describing katabatic winds. However, the direction down canyon would be SE, not NW. Yes, katabatic winds are common at the mouth of most canyons. It is the reason why there are windmills at the base of Spanish Fork Canyon.
There is decent snow to be found at Strawberry. You just need to know where to go. Skullcandy, try going upwind 1/2 mile at the River. Skyline is in much better shape, but it still needs a refresher. December was epic, but we have hit a dry spell. Usually, this foretells a wet spring, but who knows for certain.

Snow conditions at UT sites are day to day with sun and temp being the key factors for snow quality. For the uninspired... the conditions probably suck, as skullcrusher points out. But if your'e paying attention and look beyond the most popular riding spots (strawberry river, bosco hill...) there are very good sessions to be had. The trick is to find the spots without old sled and kite tracks, and a dose of good luck helps. I've had 4 sessions in the last week or so. One day was too warm... manky mashed taters. One was too cold... cartilage crushing concrete. And two of those days were marvelous shreddy corn that rode like powder.
Still... we are all more than ready for some proper pow days. Hopefully the pattern change we need started today.

I was heading north from the sledder's parking lot before chicken creek. There was a massive canyon at the end of the valley, looking up to the NNE. At the summit I see a peak called Red Ledge at 9800 ft. FSR 245. Big was storm up there, and the wind coming down out of the mouth was blowing so steady. Downhill, side wind, banks like waves. You could get over to the side and find protection to get upwind again. Never experienced anything like it.

You were riding Co-Op Creek. Good spot. We do get katabatic winds that come down from the N off the Uintas down strawberry river and Co-Op. Typically that would be during a high pressure setup and early in the day. If there was storm fallout over the Uintas it could have been a diverging outflow from the storm. Whatever the reasons Strawbs is often blessed with a solid NW flow, many times against all odds.

Snow conditions are even worse this week... and deteriorating. It rained last night and Its freaking 50 degrees today and the next 7 to 10 days! Ski resorts are garbage right now too.
Im ready to write this winter off in Utah. Once you get into March its time to think about rush lake out by Toelle. Just hope that it fills up to a rideable depth this spring

To follow up on Hepp's response, a buddy of mine is out in Colorado having a great time. A couple solid days on Dillon lake followed by a superb session at Rabbit Ears.
